Aligarh: 6 injured as cops, anti-CAA protesters clash; ‘role of AMU girls to be probed’

According to the police, among those injured, one has suffered a bullet injury on his leg and doctors have said his condition is stable.

Heavy police force has been deployed in the area.

“It took around 10-15 minutes to bring the situation under control. Following the incident, mobile internet services have been suspended in the district for 24 hours,” said District Magistrate Aligarh, Chandra Bhushan Singh.

Singh added that some girls of Aligarh Muslim University had “instigated the protestors” and their roles would be probed.

“We will also take compensation of damages from people involved in the violence,” said the DM. He added that the police had not fired shots while quelling the violence.

Since the last month, women in large numbers, accompanied by children, have been protesting against the citizenship law and the proposed National Register of Citizens outside Shahjamal Eidgah in Aligarh. After rain in Aligarh on Thursday, protestors demanded to erect a tent at the Eidgah. When permission for this was denied, women along with children started protesting outside the Uparkot police station.

Since the police station is located in a busy area with a mixed population, a team of the district administration and the police tried to convince protestors to withdraw the agitation.

Uparkot police station SHO Ravindra Kumar Singh said that on Sunday evening, a group of protesting women began pelting stones on police vehicles. When cops tried to stop them, the protestors damaged vehicles parked on the road and also pelted stones on nearby shops.

At Babri Mandi area, which is some distance from the police station, another group of protesters pelted vehicles with stones, he added.

In the first week of February, the Aligarh police had issued notices to 153 persons, including women protesting outside the Shahjamal Eidgah, to sign a bond that they would ensure peace.
