Gadsden Music Club

The Gadsden Music Club held the sixth meeting of its 104th year on Feb. 12 in the Music Center at Temple Beth Israel.

Vice-President Sharron Yancy presided as the event began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the robust singing of the national anthem by the membership and a large number of visitors. As always, the National Federation of Music hymn, “To Thee Our God, Creator, King,” was sung by all.

The Music Club’s Hymn of the Month, sung by all those present, was the beloved spiritual “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” Hostess Gwen Axtell provided snacks for GMC’s members and their guests.

The monthly program was provided by middle school and high school students of GMC teachers. Piano students of Sharon Reynolds were Lowndes Robinson, Ellis Haynie and Kaylee Dove; piano students of Sharron Yancy were Judi Drew (adult) and Joey Dunlap. Four members of the Etowah Youth Orchestra, taught by EYO Director Mike Gagliardo, were sisters Anaya (viola) and Ines (violin) Stevens, and Riseborough sisters Lily (violin) and Emma (accompaning on guitar).

Parents and friends of the students were there to hear their children in concert.

The club’s Poetry Moment featured William Wordsworth’s “As I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud,” read by Harry Butler. The meeting was adjourned with the singing of the NFMC Benediction, “The Gift of Song.”

The Gadsden Music Club meets at 10 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month and is open to all who have an interest in music. Visitors are especially welcome. The GMC is a member of the Alabama and the National Federation of Music Clubs and was organized in 1915 — more than a century of service to Gadsden.
