Hampton officials ask residents to back sports betting location
Hampton officials are asking residents to put the popular tourist town in the running for one of the state’s sports betting locations.
Residents next month will vote on a warrant article to allow for a physical sports betting location in the town. The New Hampshire Lottery, in partnership with DraftKings, is set to designate 10 sportsbook locations across the state – but only in communities that have voted to allow such sites.
“It’s something that attracts people, and I can see Hampton being more popular in the winter here in Hampton Beach if we had it,” said Rick Griffin, chairman of the Hampton Board of Selectmen.
Officials think one possible location in Hampton could be Ocean Gaming, a charitable gaming facility.
“To me, it’s surprising that this place down here has been as busy as it is, and I see this to be a major draw for them,” Griffin said of Ocean Gaming. “The people that own the place do a very nice job, and they’ve made fans of all the people around here.”
Some residents said they liked the idea of having a sports betting location in Hampton.
“I think it will be successful for the whole state, but I think here, you’re going to bring the tourists in during the summertime,” said resident Scott Barbera.
Online sports betting has been legal in New Hampshire since the beginning of the year. It’s conducted through an app run by DraftKings.
