NAVI MUMBAI: The decomposing bodies of a young businessman, his wife and two young children were recovered on Saturday morning from a housing complex here. The police said he had strangled his family and then hanged himself.
Though two suicide notes were found and the cops verified it was the man's handwriting, they do not give any specific reason for the step.
It is unclear when the murder-suicide took place, as the flat owner found the bodies after failing to reach them for two months.
Nitesh Upadhyay, 35, was into online trading, and the family, originally from Delhi, had taken the seventh-floor apartment at Sai Corner Society in Taloja phase 1, on rent last September. He strangled wife Babli, 30, and daughter and son aged eight and seven, respectively, before hanging himself from the fan with a sari, said senior inspector Kashinath Chavan of Taloja police.
Neighbours were not aware of the deaths till Rajesh Bhardwaj, the flat-owner from Vashi, arrived on Saturday morning. Bhardwaj had gone to meet Upadhyay as his mobile had been switched off and rent for two months was due.
Suicide note blames no one, requests cremation
As nobody opened the door despite repeated knocks, Bhardwaj took the society secretary upstairs and opened the flat with a spare key. “As he opened the door, an unbearable stench emanated. They saw Upadhyay’s body hanging from the fan, and the wife and children on the bed. Bhardwaj informed the police control room,” said Chavan.
Police found a note in the hall. “We committed suicide. In the bedroom, there is a letter, gold and cash. Whoever finds the body, cremate us as per Hindu ritual. We don’t have anyone,” it said. The other note stated: “...Nobody should be blamed for this. We are doing it of our own will.” Police registered a murder case under section 302 of IPC against Upadhyay.
