Nine vehicles, eatery set on fire in Delhi’s Karawal Nagar clash

Fresh clashes erupted in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar late on Sunday when miscreants set fire to at least nine vehicles and a roadside eatery. Though police managed to control the violence, the mob didn’t allow the fire tenders to move in till the vehicles were completely gutted. The mob also pelted stones at the police teams trying to disperse them.

NEW DELHI: Fresh clashes erupted in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar late on Sunday when miscreants set fire to at least nine vehicles and a roadside eatery. Though police managed to control the violence, the mob didn’t allow the fire tenders to move in till the vehicles were completely gutted. The mob also pelted stones at the police teams trying to disperse them.
Police said the violence broke out around 9.45pm when a 60-strong mob went on a rampage on Dayalpur Road, which is about 6km from the Maujpur protest site.
The miscreants also stoned the windows of some residential buildings along the way.
The two tenders sent by the fire department were stopped by the protesters nearly a kilometre away. The mob threatened to set them on fire too. The fire teams reached the spot after two hours under police protection.
The situation remained tense till late at night as the protesters kept pelting stones at police. Cops had to lathi-charge the miscreants and use tear gas.
Later, senior officers reached the spot and a flag march was conducted. The security personnel asked locals to go back to their houses. A few policemen were injured and some private vehicles parked on the roadside were also damaged by the stone-pelters. A case of rioting, arson, causing damage to property has been registered.
Police said the rampage was captured on video by some mediapersons. They will use the footage to identify the miscreants.
