PATNA: Motorcycle-borne criminals shot at a jeweller and looted cash and jewellery worth over Rs 11 lakh from him in Madhubani district on Sunday. The victim, Shrawan Kumar, was admitted to the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
The incident took place around 8.30am when Shrawan was on way to his shop from his house under the Rajnagar police station area in the district.
Five criminals riding two motorcycles intercepted him near Narhari Bhagwanpur and attempted to snatch his bag containing money and gold jewellery.
One of the robbers pumped three bullets into Shrawan’s body when he resisted the loot. The criminals then escaped with the bag containing Rs 1.25 lakh in cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh. The injured was rushed to the Raj Nagar referral hospital from where he was shifted to sadar hospital at Madhubani.
“The borders of the district have been sealed and vehicle checking drive launched to arrest the criminals involved in the incident,” Madhubani additional superintendent of police Kamini Bala said.
The victim’s younger brother, Manohar Kumar, told police that Shrawan had left home around 8am for the shop at Rajnagar on his motorbike. “I reached the hospital after being informed by some local residents, who had admitted Shrawan to the hospital for treatment,” a police officer quoted Manohar as saying.
Meanwhile, the jewellery shop owners of Rajnagar observed bandh to protest the incident. They have threatened to launch an agitation if the robbers are not arrested soon. “We have given a 48-hour ultimatum to police to arrest the criminals,” Rajesh Gupta, a jewellery shop owner, said.
