NORTHEAST SOMERSET, Maine (AP) - A Maine man died in a snowmobiling crash in the northern part of the state on Moosehead Lake, state authorities said.

The crash killed Gregory Lemar, 59, of Wiscasset on Sunday night, police said. He was operating the snowmobile from Greenville to Rockwood just before 5 p.m. when he appeared to hit a pressure ridge of ice at a high rate of speed near Hogback Island, police said.

Snowmobilers in the area tried to assist Lemar, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, despite wearing a helmet, police said. It was the seventh fatal snowmobiling accident of the riding season in Maine. The state has averaged six per year over the past decade.

Police said Lemar’s wife, Wanda Lemar, was on a second snowmobile following behind him when the crash happened.
