Secunderabad: Tippler threatens to jump off street light pole, rescued

A 35-year-old drunk man climbed on top of a street light and threatened to jump off at SP Road on Sunday. Civilians tried to lure him down with liquor bottles but failed. Officials from Gopalpuram police station, fire department and GHMC rescued him after an hour.

The man in question, Mohammed Ijaz, is a resident of Begumpet and was working as a cable operator, until he lost his job a month ago.

The man in question, Mohammed Ijaz, is a resident of Begumpet and was working as a cable operator, until he lost his job a month ago.

“He has been addicted to alcohol for years. He would come home drunk and fight with his wife regularly. He was fired because he would report to duty in a drunken state,” said Gopalpuram inspector, Sai Eshwar Goud.

On Sunday, he climbed a street light pole at 1 pm in drunken state and threatened to jump off the pole. “Some 10 policemen tried to talk him out of it. We put a tarpaulin and a net below the pole, in case he jumped or fell.” added the officer.

After almost an hour-and-a-half, the man was rescued. “He was upset about his job. He couldn't afford alcohol and his wife refused to give him money for liquor,” said the inspector. No case has been registered against Ijaz.
