UP: Police books 350 people for Sunday night’s violence in Aligarh

AGRA: Aligarh police on Monday registered eight FIRs against more than 350 persons in connection with the arsons and group clashes that took place in the city a day earlier.
Confirming this, Aligarh SSP Muniraj G, said FIRs have been registered under various sections of IPC including section 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion), 307 (attempt to murder) at Kotwali police station, where the violent clashes took place on Sunday evening.
He said about 100 people have been identified and 40 of them are named in the FIR.
He said, the situation is still tense but under control. No untoward incident was reported from any place during the day, but some women sat on dharna at Jeevannagar area.
"We are maintaining a tight vigil in the city and things will back to normal soon," the SSP said.
The police is also initiating confidence-building measures with the help of community leaders to help in restoring normalcy in all the affected areas, said the SSP.
He told TOI that the police have identified 100 persons who were involved in the clashes so far. "CCTV footages are being screened and evidences are being collected against miscreants," he added.
According to police, Mohamad Tariq, who received gunshot injuries on Sunday's violence, is now stable and has been shifted to the ICU at the Trauma Centre of the Jawahar Lal Nehru hospital after doctors performed an emergency surgery on him.

Talking to TOI, district magistrate C B Singh said that if anyone makes an attempt to spread rumours, would be dealt with an iron hand and NSA would be invoked in such cases. He said that internet services will be restored from Monday midnight.
Earlier on Sunday evening, trouble broke out at the Upper Kot locality when police were trying to evict women anti-CAA protestors who were squatting on the Mohamed Ali Road near the Kotwali police station since Saturday morning.
Some people protested, leading to a scuffle and within minutes, brick batting started from neighbouring areas.
According to eye witness accounts, the trouble was initially limited to the Upper Kot locality where the women protestors were staging the dharna, but after police action against anti-CAA protestors, the tension spilt over to the neighbouring localities, including Babri Mandi.
