SPORTS ROUNDUP: B-CU women’s win streak at 12

Daniella Hatcher scored a career-high 27 points as Bethune-Cookman won its 12th straight with an 86-70 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over South Carolina State on Saturday in Moore Gymnasium.

The junior from Orlando had 10 first-quarter points as the Lady Wildcats (20-5 overall, 12-1 MEAC) jumped out to a 23-10 first quarter lead. She was 12-19 from the field and also had eight rebounds.

Amaya Scott and Kiana Williams each scored 13, and freshman Imani Reid 12 as B-CU remained a game-and-a-half ahead over Norfolk State atop the league standings. The two teams meet Monday evening. The Lady Wildcats also posted their third consecutive 20-win season.

Heinaya Moton led South Carolina State (3-22, 2-11) with 27 points.

Stetson goes 2-1 in beach volleyball tripleheader

Rebecca Ingram and Quinci Birker delivered a clutch 15-13 third-set victory to lift No. 9 Stetson to a 3-2 win over No. 16 TCU on Saturday at the Seminole Beach Bash in Tallahassee.

The Hatters went on to post a 2-1 mark in their season-opening tripleheader. Stetson fell, 4-1, to No. 2 Florida State before sweeping Louisiana-Monroe, 5-0.

Ana Costa and Kyce Martins went a perfect 3-0 on the day. The Brazilians played at Pair 2 in the first two duals and at Pair 1 against ULM. It was Martins’ first three victories as a Hatter.

The Hatters will continue play at the Seminole Beach Bash on Sunday. Stetson will face No. 7 Cal Poly at 8 a.m. and Houston Baptist at 1 p.m.

ERAU men take road win at Eckerd

The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team survived a comeback attempt from Eckerd to get its first road win in nearly three months, beating the Tritons, 90-82, in St. Petersburg.

The Eagles (18-9, 10-9 in the Sunshine State Conference lost two post players due to fouls and watched a 23-point lead shrink to five in the waning moments, but made their free throws when it mattered most to down Eckerd (8-18, 4-14), completing the season sweep of the Tritons.

Romeo Crouch had his 13th 20-point game of the season, finishing with 20 points to lead ERAU. Nick Heard scored 19 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Chris Murray had 16 points and nine boards. Both Elijah Jenkins and Tylin Lockett-Fuller scored 10 points for ERAU.

Embry-Riddle guaranteed itself a berth into the SSC Tournament with the victory and will wrap up the 2019-20 regular season next Saturday at home against Nova Southeastern.

Stetson softball drops 2

Stetson dropped both games at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic on Saturday, falling, 3-0, to Troy and 8-6 to Clemson in 8 innings at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Hatters are 6-7.

Chloe Temples pitched a complete game against Troy, striking out a season-high seven over six innings of work. She then pitched six more innings of relief against Clemson, striking out four.

Stetson managed just 10 hits on the day, getting two apiece from Nikki Steiniger, Blake Crews, Brianna Clary and Alyssa Gilman. Lizzie Shubert hit a two-run double in the second inning against Clemson.

Stetson will wrap up play in the Citrus Classic on Sunday morning vs. Oakland. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.

ERAU baseball wins 2

The Embry-Riddle baseball team swept a doubleheader from host Saint Leo in Saturday.

ERAU beat the Lions, 13-5 and 13-2.

The Eagles are 10-3, 2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference. Saint Leo is 2-10, 1-2.

The Eagles turned a pitcher's duel into a blowout in the day's opener, getting a quality start from Payton Rice and big games offensively from John Devine and Josh Reynolds.

Rice (2-0) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

Devine and Reynolds finished with four hits and two RBI each.

In the second game, Andrew Martinez had four hits in driving in six runs.

ERAU track and field hosts Bahama House meet

The Embry-Riddle men’s track & field team hosted its annual Bahama House First Chance Last Chance Meet on Saturday. A number of Eagles set personal bests and hit conference-qualifying marks throughout the day.

On the track, Shaun Bullock (15:08.73) and Ryan Szklany (15:14.77) both hit qualifying standards for the Peach Belt Championships in the 5000m, while also placing 1-2 in the race. Will Moten also qualified for the PBC meet with a fourth-place time of 22.11 in the 200m. Zackary Tempert (1:05.75) and Seth Cribben (1:06.72) both achieved personal bests in the 400m hurdles, while the 3000m Steeplechase saw Ryan Musil (11:00.60) and Shane Brownrigg (11:03.62) clock PRs and Garrett Noltemeyer (10:15.37) post a season best.

In the field events, Terrence Bobet qualified for the conference meet in the javelin (43.57m), hammer (42.54m), shot put (12.57m), and discus (39.16m). Zackary Carpenter also hit conference standards in the hammer (46.01m) and shot put (12.15m), while Connor Guinn qualified in the javelin (43.63m) and the pole vault (4.20m). Justin Brown joined Bobet and Guinn in qualifying in the javelin with a mark of 45.51m, while Colin McNally joined Guinn as a pole vault qualifier with a height of 4.05m and Heinrich Adriaanse joined Bobet as a PBC qualifier in the discus with a personal-best mark of 42.52m.

Zakary Smith posted a PR in the high jump with a height of 1.78m while Jacob Johnson posted personal bests in the javelin (41.48m), hammer (33.92m), and shot put (10.82m). Jacob Lyons also achieved PRs in the javelin (37.33m) and the hammer (27.16m).

On the women’s side, 16 ERAU athletes set personal records and recorded 10 Peach Belt Conference Championship-qualifying marks during the event.

Rachel Jones won the 1500m in a PBC-qualifying time of 5:04.92, while Kara Funke took second in a personal-best time of 5:06.61 and Grayson Iller took sixth with a PR-setting time of 5:19.38. Josie Gray picked up an event win and qualified for the conference meet in the 5000m with a time of 19:03.48. The 100m hurdles saw Kamri Roan win in a personal-best time of 15.26, followed closely by Dejah Saunders who also set a PR with a second-place time of 15.47. Roan recorded a second PR of the day with a time of 27.66 in the 200m, while Tyller Campbell notched a personal record with a winning time of 1:08.18 in the 400m hurdles.

Amber Sauer had a strong showing in the field events, beginning with a first-place mark of 12.30m in the shot put that also served as a PBC-qualifying mark as well as a personal best. She also set a PR and qualified for the conference meet with a throw of 37.46m in the discus, earned a third PBC standard with a mark of 39.86m in the hammer, and set a PR with a toss of 27.02m in the javelin. Sophia Gustely posted a pair of conference standards, including a first-place throw of 38.52m in the javelin and a second-place mark of 38.09m in the discus, while also recording a PR in the hammer (34.40m). Her sister, Phoebe Gustely, matched her by qualifying for the PBC meet in the discus with a first-place mark of 40.94m and the javelin with a runner-up throw of 33.76m. The final conference qualifier of the day was Taylor Champer who posted a mark of 11.21m in the triple jump. Hannah Thomas-Russell notched PRs in the javelin (28.28m) and pole vault (1.95m), while Victoria Perez hit personal bests in the hammer (24.20m), discus (31.84m), and shot put (10.28m).

Stetson women fall in lacrosse at Fresno State

Marina Rotella scored four goals to lead Stetson, but host Fresno State never trailed as the Bulldogs handed the Hatters a 21-13 loss Saturday.

The Bulldogs are 2-1. The Hatters are 1-1.

Stetson opened the second half by scoring three straight goals as Maria Snee, Rotella and Erin Collier each found the net to get the Hatters within 14-7.

Riley Reagan, Snee and Collier each scored two goals for the Hatters.

Stetson men win 4th in row in tennis

Stetson men's tennis picked up a 5-2 win at Mercer on Saturday in Macon, Georgia.

The Hatters (7-2) won for the fourth straight match.

Sven Thiergard-Fabian Penzkofer, and Josh Laka-Tim Gennes won in doubles.

Linus Bergevi, Clement Hamel and Alexandre Hillhouse won in singles for Stetson.

Stetson men fall at Liberty

Stetson suffered a 77-49 loss to ASUN Conference front runner Liberty on Saturday in Lynchburg, Va.

Jahlil Rawley led the Hatters (15-14 overall, 9-5 ASUN) with 12 points, while Joel Kabimba added 11.

Liberty is 26-3, 12-2. The Flames held a 34-17 lead at halftime, and never let the Hatters get to any closer than 13 points.

The Hatters next host North Florida on Thursday at 7 p.m.

ERAU women fall at Eckerd

The Eckerd women’s basketball team defeated ERAU, 87-65, on Saturday in St. Petersburg.

Eckerd is 18-5, 14-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Eagles are 9-16, 7-12.

Nikki Tucker led ERAU with 21 points and four rebounds. Sydney Jones and Sarah Jones added 13 and 12 points, respectively, and Sydney Jones led the Eagles with nine rebounds.

The Eagles will look to play their way into the final spot in the eight-team Sunshine State Conference tournament next Saturday when they host Nova Southeastern at 4 p.m. in the final game of the regular season.

ERAU loses in women’s lacrosse

The Embry-Riddle women’s lacrosse team faced one of the top teams in the country on Saturday, falling at fifth-ranked Queens, 18-7, in Charlotte, N.C.

ERAU is 1-1. Queens is 2-0.

McKenzie Jackson and Ellie Dailey each tallied a pair of goals while Mya Watson registered a goal and an assist for ERAU.

Stetson doomed by errors in baseball loss

Stetson made five errors in a 6-3 home loss to Hartford on Friday night.

The Hatters fell to 4-1. Hartford is 1-0.

The miscues led to four unearned runs for the Hawks.

Stetson starter Chris Gonzalez (0-1) battled on the mound in his second start of the year, surrendering three runs (two earned) on seven hits over his six innings of work.

Stetson women’s tennis blanked at FSU

Stetson women's tennis dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 2 Florida State on Friday in Tallahassee.

The Hatters are 4-4.

Stetson women fall at Liberty in basketball

Day'Neshia Banks scored 25 points but Stetson fell to Liberty, 73-53, on Saturday in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Despite the loss, the Hatters (11-15, 5-8 ASUN) clinched a berth in the ASUN Championship for the 17th consecutive season. Three regular season games remain to determine the team's seeding before the tournament begins in March.

Emily Lytle scored 20 points to lead the Flames (15-11, 8-5).
