No revelers to be found on Champ de Mars
According to Le Nouvelliste, dozens of protesters took to Champ de Mars to demonstrate against the organization of the national carnival, which is to take place on Feb. 23, 24 and 25. Avenue de la Liberté, rue Saint-Honoré, avenue Magloire Ambroise, have all been affected and are in disarray. The Champ de Mars, reserved for this year’s national carnival’s festivities, isn’t ready to welcome the most popular festival in the country. Continue reading
Police officer shot and injured on Champ de Mars as tensions rise
Tensions came to boiling point on Champ de Mars after some plainclothes police took part in a march and shot in the air once they arrived in the downtown area, reported Juno7. Military soldiers reacted by firing warning shots. The situation escalated between both plainclothes police officers claiming to be from the national police union and other uniformed police and Haitian Armed Forces. A police officer part of a specialized unit was shot and injured during the clash. Continue reading
Terminated police officers have right to appeal
A number of police officers have taken to blocking streets, erecting barricades of burning tires, and setting vehicles on fire in protest, demanding better working conditions and their right to organize a union.
The chief inspector general of the Police National d’Haiti, Hervé Julien, said he was saddened by this situation. After 24 years of career in the national police, he said he cannot fathom the situation the national police finds itself in according to Le Nouvelliste. Continue reading
Haiti police and army square off in gun battle on first day of Carnival
On the first day of Haiti’s pre-Lenten Carnival celebration, the country’s two armed forces squared off Sunday, with off-duty members of the Haiti National Police and their supporters exchanging gunfire for more than two hours with members of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse’s reconstituted army just steps away from the presidential palace in Port-au-Prince.
The gun battle between cops — some of them in uniform and others hooded and dressed in civilian clothing fighting alongside civilian protesters — and members of the newly revived Armed Forces of Haiti took place shortly after 1 p.m. on the Champ de Mars, the staging ground for Carnival festivities. UN calls for end to stalemate in Haiti
Leaders in Haiti must step up and end the political impasse between President Jovenel Mose and a surging opposition movement that has paralyzed the island nation since July 2018, the top UN official there said on Thursday in a briefing to the UN Security Council in New York.

Haitian Painter Richard Barbot Paints Like a Jazz Musician
Richard Barbot was born in Haiti and has lived in Montreal since his childhood. He has displayed his work since 1984, including his first solo exhibit a year later. Recently, Barbot held an exhibit at the Manhattan headquarters of SEIU 1199 union. Barbot says that the human figure often represents the central element of his paining. “As I paint various characters, I try to create a visual atmosphere through which I can express my thoughts, my emotions or my social commitment.
