KOLHAPUR: An unidentified woman attacked a 48-year-old religious preacher with a sharp weapon on Monday night.
The preacher identified as Jagannath Akaram Hirve and a resident of New Shahupuri, Kolhapur is admitted to the ICU of a private hospital. Police suspect personal rivalry and property issues may be the reason behind the attack.
According to Shahupuri police station, Hirve works as a secretary of the Church Council, Kolhapur and looks after the management of the assets and properties related to the Church.
On Monday, he had gone to Islampur to inspect the church work there and returned Kolhapur at around 8 pm. He stopped his car near a church in the Nagala park area as he waited for one of the employees to get some documents from the office.
Suddenly a woman walking from the side of the road approached him and stabbed him in the throat. Hirve immediately raised an alarm as his colleague rushed for his help. The woman disappeared in the dark as Hirve bleeded profusely. He was immediately rushed to the Chhatrapati Pramila Raje (CPR) civil hospital for treatment but was later admitted to a private hospital where he is recuperating in the ICU.
The police said that the hospital authorities have kept him under observation. “We are gathering information about the incident and trying to find out the reason behind the attack. We have launched a search operation for the woman and will soon reach her. We are looking if Hirve had any personal rivalry or had quarrelled with anyone recently. The chances of a dispute over the property cannot be ruled out. We are exploring all the angles related to the incident and are investigating the case to find out the suspect,” said a police officer.
