SECUNDERABAD: As many as 15 gravel stretches are slated for conversion into cement concrete roads in Musheerabad, Secunderabad, Malkajgiri and Amberpet circles.
“The 15 stretches in Secunderabad run up to almost four kilometres and are being laid at a cost of Rs 2.89 crore,” said a Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) official.

Speaking to TOI, resident welfare associations, commuters and activists emphasised on the need to restore such stretches as they pose a threat to motorists.
“Chances of vehicles skidding on such roads is more. The friction is unstable and should a motorist apply brakes in an emergency, he may end up hurting himself,” said BT Srinivasan of the United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations (UFERWAS). “I urge authorities to convert the existing gravel stretches near Sitaramnagar Colony in Malkajgiri to CC roads too,” he added.
Another resident from Alwal urged authorities to inspect the by-lanes in residential areas and take appropriate measures where needed. “Gravel stretches haunt commuters who frequent the by-lanes of Alwal, Secunderabad and Malkajgiri. I request GHMC to take inputs from resident welfare associations and carry out restoration on these stretches,” said PM Sai Prasad, an activist from Alwal. “The visibility is also poor due to the dust that rises from these gravel stretches,” said another activist, Harish Daga.
Restoration work on gravel stretches is being carried out across the twin cities. “A total of 580 stretches covering a little over 291 kilometres are being restored at a cost of Rs 170.7 crore. To speed up work, a special budget requirement is to be obtained from GHMC zonal commissioners,” read a statement by the civic body.
