Telangana: Three members of a family drown after car falls into canal

HYDERABAD: Four members of a family met with a tragedy in Nalgonda on Thursday morning as the car they were travelling in accidentally fell into a canal at PA Pally in Nalgonda. Three members of this family died and a 8th class boy was rescued by two local villagers, who courageously got into the canal.
Nalgonda police said that V Rangaiah,40, his wife Alivelu,38, their daughter and son- Keerthi, a BTech student, and Karthik, 8th class student- started their return journey to Hyderabad from Timapur village in Devarkonda mandal.
They started their journey in their car at 8.30am and at around 8.45am, when they were travelling on the bund, which is along the canal of Alimineti Madhava Reddy project, accidentally their car fell into the canal. There is no divider between canal and bund.
Few minutes later, two locals- Vijay and Ram Babu- who are also from Timapur village, when they were passing on the bund, suddenly stumbled upon a car which was floating on the water in the canal.
Immediately, they got into the water to save the persons trapped inside the car. Vijay and Babu, managed to bring Karthik out of the car and the car which was already sinking by this time, submerged.
"When Vijay and Babu first saw the car in canal, it was still floating. By the time, they saved Karthik, it started to submerge. Rangaiah, Alivelu and Keerthi died in the mishap,’’ Anand Reddy, deputy superintendent of police (Devarakonda Division) told TOI.
Rangaiah’s family came to Nalgonda on Tuesday, to meet his parents who reside in Timapur. It was on Thursday morning, few minutes after they started their return journey, the accident took place. What led to the car fall into the canal, is still unknown. The canal is nearly 15 feet deep.
Later when police were informed about the mishap, they reached the spot and by using ropes, the car was brought out. The dead bodies were bought out and shifted to local government hospital for post-mortem examination.
This is the third incident in the recent past, where in motorists travelling in car died after their car fell in canal in Telangana.
