DARJEELING: The repair and renovation work of the iconic Old Super Market in Darjeeling is expected to be completed soon and opened for business.
The super market used to be the most prominent and imposing structure for trade when it was commissioned for commercial activity in 1975. However, over the years, new structures started mushrooming in the town, leaving the super market that is under the Darjeeling Municipality to its present state of dilapidation.

With the condition of the building deteriorating due to neglect, a tender was floated in December 2018 to start renovation work. Work started a year later, from February, 2019. "But there were certain hurdles because of which work has not been completed as yet. However, we are ensuring that the work will be completed at the earliest. We will send an inspection team to see how much progress has been made," said an official of the municipality.
"We had floated tenders for repair of 43 units on the top floor of the main building. We have, however, also laid tiles on the first and second floors and re-worked on all the stairs. Work on wooden window panes, painting and plastering on exteriors and also railings have been under taken," said the official.
