Kaimur police recover Rs 1.25 crore from car near Mohania toll plaza
SASARAM: Kaimur police recovered Rs1.25 crore in cash from a car at toll plaza on NH-2 near Mohania late on Thursday night. Two occupants of the car, including the driver, have been detained for further interrogation as police did not get any satisfactory reply for carrying the heavy cash. Kaimur SP Dilnawaz Ahamad confirmed the incident.
On getting information, a team of officials from the income-tax department also reached Mohania police station to inquire into the source of the cash recovered.
According to sources, as a part of routine drive against liquor smuggling at the toll plaza on UP-Bihar border, police spotted the white car bearing the registration number of West Bengal on Thursday night.
During a through search, police found a tin box beneath the rear seat of the vehicle. After opening the box, police recovered Rs 1.25crore cash. Driver Shahnur Malik and occupants S K Zahir Hussian said the cash belonged to a Kolkata-based famous firm engaged in furniture and saree business.
The cash was collected from traders of Varanasi and other cities of UP and they were on the way to Kolkata. But following failure of the duo in furnishing any related documents in support of their claim, police seized the cash, car and detained them.
SP Dilnawaz said further action would be taken in this connection only after an inquiry report of the income-tax department is submitted.
