On tonight’s not-to-miss Expedition Unknown, Discovery hopes you will dive headfirst into the lore of the Bermuda Triangle.

Expedition Unknown star Joshua Gates, our intrepid host, actually does dive in, headfirst, to explore the waters.

Gates is reporting on the area’s unexplained histories that involve ships, pleasure crafts, and airplanes disappearing without a trace.

The episode promises to dive deeply into the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle, found in the Atlantic Ocean.

This covers a triangulated area of water from Puerto Rico to Bermuda to Miami. It is a place where history recorded the deaths and disappearances of thousands of lives since the mid-19th century.

His investigation leads him to the shallower ocean floor in the Triangle, as well as the skies above, and ventures out to space as he researches some of the most intriguing disappearances in history.

In our exclusive clip, Gates speaks with several scientists, including Svetlana Leksina, Exhibit Project Manager, Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, William Donato, Archaeologist, and Bryan Chan, CEO of Night Crew Labs, as he gets leads to the truth of the Triangle.

What’s so weird about the Bermuda Triangle?

Gorgeous multi-hued waters and reefs abound in shallow waters between Miami and the Bahamas.  A diver’s paradise except there’s a murky history.

Unexplained circumstances and unlikely naval and airplane accidents are recorded in the triangle-shaped area that have perplexed over time.

They include one in which the pilots of a squadron of U.S. Navy bombers became disoriented in the air zone, their planes never found.

This area is approximately 500,000 square miles of ocean off the southeastern tip of Florida. Even explorer Christopher Columbus reportedly journaled strange goings-on in the area.

Gates references the March 1918 event of the USS Cyclops, a 542-foot-long Navy cargo ship with over 300 men vanishing.

“Only God and the sea know what happened to the great ship,” U.S. President Woodrow Wilson later said of the tragedy.

Renowned Nova Scotia seaman Joshua Slocum disappeared on a 1909 voyage from Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts) heading to South America.

Many people believed it was in the area of the Triangle that he perished.

Other boats and planes have vanished from the area in good weather, without radioing distress messages. Despite this, people navigate the waters every day without any reported incident.

Inconsistent, yet disturbing reports of “vanished in thin air” boats and plane, as this “Devil’s Triangle,” another nickname for the mysterious area, has claimed too many lives to be easily explained away.
