GAYA: Three alleged criminals have been arrested by the police for firing near an anti-CAA protest site on the outskirts of Gaya town. The firing took place near Bara village of the Chakand police station area late on Wednesday evening.
The trio was overpowered by anti-CAA protestors and handed over to the police. Senior police officers claimed the arrested men were robbers and the incident has nothing to do with anti CAA-NPR-NRC protests.
The incident caused tension in the area and soon a large group of protest sympathisers gathered from adjoining villages.
However, the tension subsided following prompt police intervention to prevent rumour-mongering.
Gaya SSP Rajiv Mishra confirmed that the firing took place near the dharna site, but clarified that it had nothing to do with the protest. “The pistol used in the firing has been seized,” Mishra said.
The SSP added that the trio were highway robbers and one of them, an auto-driver from Chatra in Jharkhand, had bought a pistol from Munger about 10 days ago.
“He bought the pistol for Rs 20,000 and planned a robbery along with his two accomplices. The Jharkhand native drives auto rickshaw in Gaya town. He also smuggled liquor and along with two others consumed it and lay in wait at a shed. As a biker approached the point, they opened fire. The biker managed to dodge the criminals. And nearby protesters rushed and overpowered the trio,” the SSP said.
Anti-CAA protests are also going on in Shantibagh of Gaya town and Hamzapur area of Sherghati, one of the four sub-divisional headquarters of the district from nearly two months now.
