Coronavirus: Haryana imposes Section 144 to prevent gatherings

As a preventive step to check spread of coronavirus, the Haryana government on Friday imposed Section 144 in the state and said it would start using stamps to mark those who are quarantined in homes.

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government on Friday asked all the deputy magistrates (DMs) and commissioners of police of the state to invoke section-144 (issuance of prohibitory orders) of criminal procedure code (CrPc) as precautionary measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Once the orders are placed, five or more than five people would not be able to assembly in the state at the notified public place.

A formal order in this has been issued by additional chief secretary, Vijai Vardhan.
“So as to prevent and contain the spread of nCOVID 19 in Haryana, all the district magistrates/police commissioners in the state are advised to invoke section 144 of CrPc in their respective districts/jurisdiction restricting the assembly of five or more than five people in public places,” says the order. The letter has also asked the officers to provide adequate consideration for movement of people in public transport (trains, buses) or in any other mode of transport specially in the eventuality of medical emergencies.
