The five IIITs which are proposed to be given the INI status are located in Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala and Raichur.

NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha passed the Lok Sabha passed Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 on Friday, which will bring the IITs of Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala and Raichur at par with the other similar IIITs on Friday. The Bill will now be placed at the Rajya Sabha. This amendment will entitle these five IIITs to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology (BTech) or Master of Technology (M Tech) of PhD degree as issued by a university or institution of national importance.
Of these, IIIT at Bhopal, Surat and Bhagalpur have started their academic session from 2017-18, Agartala in 2018-19 and Raichur in 2019-20.
The IIIT Act of 2014 and IIIT (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017 are the unique initiatives of the Centre to impart knowledge in the field of information technology to provide solutions to the challenges faced by the country.
After passing of the Bill, union minister for HRD, Ramesh Pokhriyal said: "The Bill will encourage IIITs to promote the study of information and technology in the country through their innovative and quality methods. The Bill will declare the remaining five IIITs-PPP along with the existing 15 IIITs in Public Private Partnership mode as 'Institutions of National Importance' with powers to award degrees."
The Union Cabinet on February 5, 2020 approved the inclusion of these IIITs under the IIIT (public-private partnership) Act, 2017. At present the number of students which will get benefitted from this amendment are about 1,600. However, these institutions are at nascent stage and after having full strength in future, this will benefit as many as about 5,000 students.
Pokhriyal informed the House that among the higher education institutions in the country, the Indian Institutes of Technology have improved their global rankings significantly. There are now 24 Indian higher education institutes in the QS list of 1000 global institutes in 2020 against 14 in 2017. Similarly, there are now 36 Indian higher education institutes in Times Higher Education global 1000 institutes against three in 2013.
