NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh government approved a ‘Walk of the Stars’ walkway project in Bhopal where Bollywood celebrities’ names will be emblazoned similar to ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’ in Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

This would be the first such ‘Bollywood walkway’ in the country and perhaps among the last decisions taken as chief minister by Kamal Nath whose government fell on Friday.

Specially created memorabilia tiles, each with the name of a Bollywood star and his/her hand impressions, will be embedded on a 500-metre stretch, creating a modern cultural hub for tourists here, as per the state government proposal accessed by ET.

Nath has a good rapport with the film industry and Bollywood stars and had recently brought the IIFA Awards to Madhya Pradesh. Two big-ticket IIFA events scheduled in Bhopal and Indore later this month have been, however, postponed due to the novel coronavirus scare across the country.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, one of the most famous sidewalks in the world, boasts of over 2,600 star-shaped terrazzos bearing names of celebrities including Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Johnny Depp.

The proposed project in Bhopal, ‘Avenue of the Stars, A Bollywood Walkway - Walk of the Stars’, is aimed at creating and giving “the first and the only modern and living cultural recognition to the film industry and contribution of its stalwarts”, as per the proposal.

The idea is to make this a must-visit tourist attraction with at least six visits a year from Bollywood stars. “It will act as a very strong doorway to attract more film shoots to Madhya Pradesh,” the proposal says.

A segregated walkway area, about 10 feet wide and 500 metres long, in a strategic area in Bhopal is being earmarked for the project.

“Once every two months a tile of a shortlisted film industry celebrity will be created, and it will be set permanently into a pedestal created on the ground on the ‘Walk of the Stars’ walkway. The inauguration of the tile will be by the Bollywood celebrity itself. This can be followed by a press conference with the CM of the state and the celebrity,” the proposal says.

The state government had earlier this month asked for agencies to be shortlisted to design and prepare these tiles.

Besides top actors, famous producers, directors, music directors, singers and other personalities associated with the Indian film industry will feature in the ‘Walk of the Stars’, the state proposal says.
