AHMEDABAD: While the 'janata curfew' call is for Sunday, most parts of the city shut down on Saturday itself. While trade associations had already announced shutdowns ranging from three days to a week from Saturday, most parts of the city were deserted with markets at Teen Darwaza, CG Road, Bhadrakali, Panchkuva and Manek Chowk, among others, remaining completely closed.
While jewellers shut shop on Saturday, several chemists also plan to keep shops shut on Sunday for the janata curfew.
People prepared by stocking up on essential items. "I went and bought some medicines and toiletries. There's no panic but if the curfew is extended, I should be good to go for a few days without having to step out," said Nirali Parekh, a professional.
Due to Covid-19, the CG Road Shops Owners Association declared CG Road closed from March 22 to March 24. Several industry associations including Gujarat Garment Manufacturers' Association (GGMA), Ahmedabad Textile Processors' Association (ATPA) and even Gujarat Dyestuff Manufacturers' Association (GDMA), appealed to members to keep factories and units shut on Sunday.
A number of residential societies let housekeeping staff to skip the day's work. "We have informed all residents to give the housekeeping staff a day off from work and not cut their pay," said Ashish Zaveri, a resident of Satellite.
