PANAJI: From empty roads to deserted beaches, Goa embraced the voluntary curfew on Sunday. Commercial establishments, places of worship, bus stops and the railway stations wore a deserted look as citizens and authorities played their part in trying to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Covid-19).
Streets and thoroughfares in the capital city were empty with just the odd vehicle seen cruising the empty roads.
The concern among locals was evident in the fact that citizens resisted the urge to venture out of their homes for picnics, games or a cruise.
During the 14-hour lock down, most citizens spent time with their families, caught up with reading and took to learning about the origins of the coronavirus.
The Janta Curfew was a success in Goa, said chief minister Pramod Sawant. Later in the day, Sawant announced that the voluntary curfew would be continued for three more days in a bid to thwart the spread of the virus which has already infected more than 350 people in India.
Police personnel were seen patrolling the city, with some asking people to go indoors. Several hotels and restaurants were also closed. Except for a few pharmacies and petrol stations, most commercial establishments were shut.
Places of worship too had put up notices on the gates about the cancellation of all religious services. A notice on the gate of the Se Cathedral and Basilica of Bom Jesu said that both the premises, which are also popular with tourists, were closed in view of the janta curfew and the threat posed by the covid -19 virus.
