    Odisha extends lockdown to 14 districts, quarantined homes to be marked with stickers

    In addition to the five district and eight cities under lockdown for a week, entire districts of Puri, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Dhenkanal will follow the same rules imposed under the lockdown from between 7 am- 9 pm from 24 March until 29 March.

    The state has called for these drastic steps keeping the magnitude of the crisis in mind.
    The Odisha Government extended its lockdown of districts form five to 14 on Monday.

    In addition to the five district and eight cities under lockdown for a week, entire districts of Puri, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Dhenkanal will follow the same rules imposed under the lockdown from between 7 am- 9 pm from 24 March until 29 March.

    The notification from the health department stressed on the imperative to adopt strict social distancing and isolation measures. Nearly 3699 people, returning from abroad after March 3, had registered themselves on the state government portal as of March 23. In a day, between 7 am of 22 March and the morning of 23 March, 9677 calls had been made to the 104 helpline.

    The coastal districts of Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam, Kendrapada, Angul and towns such as Puri, industrial towns of Rourkela, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Balasore, Jajpur Jajpur Road and Bhadrak had already been under lockdon from the last two days. No public transport, including of taxis and autos is allowed, trains and busses have already been stopped, and as of Monday all domestic flights have been too.

    The state on Monday also decided to mark stickers on homes of those advised quarantine. (This comes a day after information of such people, with their personal details, leaked to the larger public on social media.) District magistrates and municipal commissioners have been to paste such stickers mentioning the duration of quarantine on the homes, allowing no one else from the community to visit the quarantined member or family. Integrated Disease Surveillance program (IDSP) cell and local police station will keep a check. “Vigil by local authorities should be kept to ensure that there is no social boycott. Local administration while calling these households should enquire about the same,’ the statement added. Local administration is to also help with essential commodities. This can be extend to people returning from other states too.

    Strict instructions have also been issued to the media barring them from interviewing or publishing names and addresses positive cases or those of their relatives. Any lapse in this matter is punishable under Section 188 of the IPC in Odisha.
