    WHO warns of 'accelerating' pandemic, expects Olympics decision soon

    • More than 300,000 cases now recorded and infections reported from nearly every country.
    • "The future of this pandemic to a greater extent will be determined by what happens with very large, densely populated countries," Ryan said.
    • "So it's really, really important that India continues to take aggressive action at the public health level and at the level of society to contain, control and suppress this disease and to save lives."
    • Dr. Mike Ryan, the WHO's top emergencies expert, said it had advised Olympic and Japanese officials about public health risks and expected a decision "very soon".
    • While it took 67 days from the first reported case to reach the first 100,000 cases of the disease caused by the coronavirus
    • It took only 11 days for the second 100,000 cases, and just four days for the third 100,000 cases, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said.
    • "We're not helpless bystanders. We can change the trajectory of this pandemic," Tedros told an online briefing for more than 300 journalists.
    • He called for global political commitment to change the trajectory of the pandemic, urging countries to take both defensive and attacking measures.

    UP government to set up coronavirus hospitals in 51 medical colleges

    • In the 51 medical colleges, there are 4,500 isolation and quarantine beds as of now for the treatment coronavirus patients.
    • Instructions have been issued to increase the number of beds to 11,000 within a week.
    • Directives have been issued to have a minimum of 20 beds and two ventilators or a maximum of 200 isolation beds and 20 ventilators in every medical college.

    World headed to recession at least as bad as during global economic crisis, says IMF

    The outlook for global growth, for 2020 it is negative -- a recession at least as bad as during the global financial crisis or worse, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said after a call with G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors.

    "But we expect recovery in 2021," she said.

    "The human costs of the coronavirus pandemic are already immeasurable, and all countries need to work together to protect people and limit the economic damage," she said.

    25 of the 28 cases confirmed positive today in Kerala are from Dubai. Of the 28, 19 are from Kasaragod district, 5 from Kannur, 2 from Ernakulam and 1 from Thrissur. There have been a total of 95 cases reported from Kerala so far, of which 4 are cured.

    • A couple from Pune, who were the first positive coronavirus cases in Maharashtra.
    • The Pune-based couple, along with their daughter, was part of a tourist group of 40 which had returned to Mumbai from Dubai on March 1.
    • They had travelled to Pune by cab.
    • The daughter of the couple and the cab driver also tested positive for the coronavirus subsequently.

    The new coronavirus pandemic is clearly "accelerating", the World Health Organization warned Monday, but said it was still possible to "change the trajectory" of the outbreak.

    Andhra govt starts innovative door-to-door campaign to trace foreign returnees

    The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday said it has traced over 10,000 foreign returnees through an innovative door-to-door campaign, out of which 140 of them have shown symptoms of coronavirus, while the rest remain asymptomatic.

    To contain the spread of COVID-19, the state government deployed over 2.5 lakh volunteers with the responsibility of screening 50 households each.

    Two-year-old among two fresh coronavirus cases in Punjab

    • The child is the grandson of the Germany-returned Nawanshahr man who died of cardiac arrest last Wednesday.
    • The 70-year-old man, who had returned from Germany through Italy on March 7, had died before the arrival of his report.
    • With the detection of his grandson as a COVID-19 patient, now 11 of his family members are infected with the virus.
    • The other patient, an 80-year-old woman, is the landowner of a friend of the Chandigarh's first coronavirus patient, an officials said.
    • A 23-year-old woman who had recently returned from London was tested positive for the disease last week.
    • After this her 27-year-old friend was also confirmed to be a case of coronavirus.
    • In Punjab, there are 15 confirmed coronavirus cases in Nawanshahr, five in Mohali, two in Amritsar and one in Hoshiarpur.

    Mylab gets commercial approval for COVID-19 test kit

    • The test kit by the company is the first 'Made in India' kit to receive commercial approval from CDSCO.
    • It is named as Mylab PathoDetect COVID-19 Qualitative PCR kit, the company said in a statement.
    • Local sourcing of test kits will be a major breakthrough for India as the testing kit by Mylab would cost nearly one-fourth of the current procurement cost.

    • The new positive cases include two from neighbouring Kerala, and five from Bengaluru.
