COIMBATORE: There has been an overwhelming response from the residents to a request from the city corporation to join hands with them in fight against the novel coronavirus disease, Covid-19.
Volunteers had donated thousands of rupees worth masks, gloves, liquid soap and sprayers to carry out disinfectant works.
Recently, the corporation released a poster requesting people to donate disinfection items.

R Raveendran from Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) said that they had donated items like masks, gloves and liquid soap through Namma Kovai forum.
Pointing out that items like masks and gloves are on high demand, he said they had placed preorder and purchased reusable cloth masks from a Tirupur-based garment factory as most of the shops had already run out of masks. We had already purchased over 1,000 masks from the garment factory and have placed more orders to Pasumai Angai, who had put up a stall in front of corporation main office at Town Hall, he added.
Members of federation of trade associations Coimbatore have donated Rs 55,000 worth sprayers which is used to disinfect the public gathering places and vehicles. As many as 30 manual sprayers and 20 power sprayers were donated to the corporation on Tuesday.

S Natrajan from the federation said that they were acting only as a bridge to meet out the demands and many people have come forward to donate things.
Meanwhile, the corporation is looking for sponsors to arrange transportation facilities for the sanitary workers. As most of the workers are staying in faraway places like Vellalore, Kovaipudur and Malumichampatti, it would be difficult for them to travel to the assigned wards when the state government has suspended all the public transportation.
On Tuesday, corporation workers were found spraying disinfectants on all the vehicles including two-wheelers and buses at public gathering places and Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in the city.
