LUCKNOW: The stock in grocery stores is also drying up due to decline in supply, mainly because many wholesalers have shut shop due to restrictions imposed to check the spread of coronavirus. Many said that they will be left with no stock of wheat, oil, rice, pulses and other essential items over the next 10 days.
“Since all supermarkets and big provision stores are closed, people are flocking to small grocery stores in their localities.
This has resulted in increase in demand. However, the supply is short as many wholesalers and dealers have closed down following the lockdown. Though these services are exempted, employees at many places have stopped coming in view of the corona threat,” said Tarun Jaiswal, a grocery shop owner in Aliganj.
Ramesh Ahuja, a store owner in Gomtinagar, said that there has been no major shortfall in supply of big brands through authorised agencies, but supply of local brands and loose wheat, rice, flour, pulses and oils have stopped.
“For me, stock of branded products is exhausting at a rapid pace. If this continues, we will neither have branded nor local ration to sell,” said Mohd Naaem, a grocery shop owner in Jankipuram.
ADM civil supplies RD Pandey said, “Supply of ration will not be stopped. We will come up with a solution within next five days.”
