KOLKATA: The state transport department is running a skeletal bus services for frontline health workers, hospital staff, patients’ relatives, security personnel and employees of medicine shops so that these citizens working in emergency services are not stranded during the lockdown.
West Bengal Transport Corporation, the state transport undertaking that serves the Kolkata metropolitan area, has deployed buses to and from all major hospitals since early on Tuesday so that health workers and patients’ relatives did not face commute problems.

According to an order of the chief secretary, these emergency routes were chalked out, based on demand. “But we are ensuring that no crowding takes place and commuters can maintain safe distance from each other. A hourly frequency is maintained and identity card or hospital admission tickets are being checked before allowing them to board the buses,” said a WBTC official.
WBTC, officers said, was maintaining safety protocols. All bus crew have been given protective gears, like gloves, masks, aprons and sunglasses. After each ride, the interiors were being sanitized. The sterilization workforce are also given personal protective equipment to safeguard themselves against possible infection. Each and every commuter is being given hand sanitizer. “We are trying our best to support emergency services in this demanding time,” said RVS Kapur, managing director WBTC.
