KOLKATA: A woman, her friend and the driver of a cab were arrested after they had set out on the road violating the lockdown protocol, allegedly lied before cops saying they were out to buy medicines when stopped a police checkpost and a lady passenger pushed and bit an on duty officer when the officers stopped their car near Punjab National Bank crossing in Salt Lake.
The entire incident was recorded on multiple video cameras by cops and onlookers in Salt Lake as the officers of Bidhannagar North police station arrested the passengers Sarmistha Debnath and Nirmal Balmiki and the driver, Md Javed.
All of them were residents of Picnic Garden.
Police said around 12.30pm, sub inspector Suman Bhattacharya and his team were at a Naka point in Salt Lake when they stopped an app cab coming from CA Island side with two passengers. The officer intercepted the vehicle and asked their identity and the purpose of travelling.
“The passengers initially denied to respond and then said they were out to buy medicines. When our officers asked them to show the prescription, they couldn’t. Then they said they were out to buy essential food items. When we asked them to show, they showed us a few packets of noodles. The claims seemed unjustified and we told them they would be prosecuted for violation the lockdown protocols and that is when the woman came out of the car and bit an officer. She had an old cut mark on her forehead which she scratched and wiped the blood on the officer’s shirt and said she would frame him for injuring her. But all of her histrionics were captured in a camera,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police.
Based on the complaint lodged by the policemen, cops booked them under IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention). The three will be produced before a Salt Lake court on Thursday, police said.
