Super League clubs join coronavirus fight efforts

ith TNM Super League kick off indefinitely postponed due to coronavirus pandemic, some clubs have joined in the fight against the pandemic by disseminating messages that encourage personal hygiene as preventive measure.

The clubs have taken advantage of the ban on all football activities by using their star players to spread messages on prevention of coronavirus.

Be Forward Wanderers, who have continued training despite the postponement of the league, have urged their supporters and the public at large to join the battle against coronavirus.

“Following the threat of Covid-19 [coronavirus], we at Be Forward Wanderers FC would like to remind all Wanderers supporters and the nation to practise hand hygiene by washing hands with soap frequently, keeping hands away from eyes, mouth and nose.

“Also don’t forget to put on a face mask when going out and keep a distance of two metres away from each other. Stay safe Nyerere!” reads a message posted on Wanderers Facebook page.

Silver Strikers have also joined the battle against the coronavirus.

A short video which features players such as midfielder Duncan Nyoni, Young Chimodzi Jnr and Hadji Wali—urges the public at large to follow health experts’ advice on how to stop the virus.

“Let’s follow healthy procedures and stay safe. We can survive this,” reads part of a flyer from Silver.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) general secretary Williams Banda applauded the clubs, saying as role models, players can play an important role in the fight against coronavirus.

“With no football activities around, players can play an important role in delivering messages in the fight on Corona virus.

“The clubs that have taken an effort to do this should be commended for their efforts. We hope other clubs will emulate the example they have set.

“After all, if we all get together and successfully fight the virus, it will be us as well [the players, fans, clubs] that will benefit once the football activities resume,” he said.

In a related development Council for Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa) says it will launch a two-month campaign to create awareness on the fight against the virus.

“This will include messages of support from football personalities to drive the campaign initiatives which is to try and reach as many fans as possible to educate them as to the dos and don’ts around the global pandemic,” reads a statement from Cosafa media team.
