Kolkata: Coughing woman stays put on bus, refuses test at ID
KOLKATA: The ID hospital at Beliaghata witnessed high drama on Thursday morning as a woman, who had been coughing during a bus journey from Barakar to Esplanade, was driven straight to the hospital for a test. But she refused to get down from the bus.
The woman stayed put inside the South Bengal State Transport Corporation bus for seven hours even though the hospital employees were wearing full protective gear and cops tried to convince her to get down and go in for a test.
Later, she was taken to MR Bangur Hospital where her swab and blood samples were collected.
The woman, who works in Lucknow, had come to Dhanbad. Since train services are suspended, she had taken a bus from Barakar to reach Kolkata. According to the driver of the bus, the woman had started coughing and sneezing immediately after she boarded the vehicle at Barakar. As soon as the bus reached Esplanade, the driver informed the police who asked him to drive the bus to the ID Hospital with the woman. The bus reached the hospital around 8.45am but the woman refused to get down.
The hospital authorities sent a team of workers, who were dressed in protective suits and wearing masks, to get her off the vehicle. But the woman was adamant, claiming that she was fit and did not require tests. Women staffers tried to convince her that since she was a Covid-19 suspect, tests were mandatory.
“Despite our efforts, she refused to budge. Other patients and staffers who had been streaming into the hospital were wary,” said an employee who boarded the bus to talk to the woman. The bus was parked at a far corner of the hospital premises. Disinfectants were sprayed on the bus as a precaution.
