Mumbai police ties up with 'Roti Bank' foundation to offer food to homeless

Mumbai: As pavement dwellers and the homeless in the city struggle to arrange food in view of the present lockdown , the Mumbai police has offered a helping hand by tying up with former Maharashtra Director General Of Police (DGP ) D Sivanandhan 's foundation, Roti Bank , in providing food to 1,000 people on Thursday.
Making the announcement of the humanitarian gesture on the Mumbai police's official Twitter handle, Mumbai policecommissioner Param Bir Singh said that the effort has been made to help the homeless during the difficult times.

"We have been providing over 6,000 meals every day on a regular basis since the past two and half years to homeless people, street urchins and students in the slum clusters of Vikhroli, Mankhrud, Trombay, Dharavi and even in far off places like Vasai and Virar. Due to the lockdown our services had been hampered. By tying trying up with the police, of which I am a part and parcel, we are able to distribute the food again," he said.
A typical thali served by Roti Bank comprises roti, dal, sabzi, raita which are freshly cooked in a special kitchen. A banana is also given along with themeal . The foundation has 10 vehicles with an equal number of drivers and helpers to carry the food to any part of the city or the suburbs within one hour after the demand.

Sivanandhan said that if the need arose, his organisation can provide avail 10,000 meals every day till the lockdown period is over.
To facilitate voluntary bodies wanting to seek help of Roti Bank for serving food to the needy, he offered the helpline--8655580001-- where orders for free food (in bulk) can be placed.
