JORHAT: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday said his government has taken all necessary steps to ensure doorstep delivery of essential commodities to everyone in the state.
"Our government will ensure that essential commodities are delivered at the doorstep of every household during the lockdown. I have directed all deputy commissioners to take all necessary steps to ensure the delivery so that people do not come out from their homes.
I urge the people of Assam to stay indoors and help the country fight the coronavirus by maintaining social distancing norms," Sonowal added.
The chief minister, accompanied by his cabinet colleague agriculture minister Atul Borah, visited Jorhat Medical College and Hospital to take stock of the situation there. Following this, Sonowal held a meeting with the government officials at the circuit house to ensure that the 21-day lockdown is a success in Assam.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Sonowal said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked people of the country to follow some instructions as it will help fight coronavirus. We should keep them in mind as it is our national duty. Our government is following the instructions and taking all necessary measures to keep the people of Assam safe." He added, "We have decided to take strict action against those violating the lockdown. It is very unfortunate that people are gathering at market places and not adhering to the social distancing norms despite specific prohibitory orders."
