It took 12 days for cases to rise from 100 to 1000 in India: Health Ministry

    Synopsis

According to the latest government tally, India has reported 1,071 cases and 29 deaths due to the Sars-Cov-2 virus, which causes the deadly infection.

Covid-19: India is still in local transmission stage, says Health Ministry
Addressing the press, Lav Agarwal, joint secretary health ministry clearly traced the rise in Covid-19 cases by drawing a clear analogy with other countries. It took 12 days for cases to rise from 100 to 1000 in India, whereas European nations have seen manifold increase, said Agarwal.

He attributed the minuscule numbers in India to strict adherence to social distancing and various pre-emptive steps undertaken by the centre and the state governments.

Answering a question, Agarwal reiterated that technically, COVID-19 in India is still in local transmission stage, there has been no community transmission so far. Government strongly believes that words like "Community Transmission" should not used loosely used, said Agarwal.

Replying to a question on the plight of stranded workers, PS Srivastava, an official from home ministry said, the home secretary has directed all District Magistrates & Superintendents of Police to ensure food & shelter for stranded workers & full wages by employers. They were also directed to ensure that landlords don't ask for rent from labourers, added Srivastava.

Admitting for the first time, Union health ministry today said that local transmission of the Covid-19 disease has begun in India, thereby indicating that the country is entering that phase of the outbreak when the source of a patient’s infection cannot be traced and isolated.

According to the latest government tally, India has reported 1,071 cases and 29 deaths due to the Sars-Cov-2 virus, which causes the deadly infection.
