LUCKNOW: It was probably the only SOS call to a police officer for which the solution came as a box of sweets.
On Sunday evening, station house officer of Hazratganj Santosh Singh was patrolling as usual when he got a call for the 'urgent' need of 'rasgullas' from an elderly citizen.
The 80-year-old caller, Ramchandra Prasad Keshari, was alone at home and having a severe episode of hypoglycaemia due to diabetes.
The rasgullas, at the moment, were his only medicine. Without losing any time, Singh arranged to buy the sweet and rushed to the senior citizen's home.
"As he quickly ate four pieces out of the six I had taken, his pale face turned bright and I realised that he was now safe," said Singh.
3 policemen give blood for patient
Keshari, a widower, lives alone in a flat in Kasmanda House as his entire family—two sons and a daughter—lives abroad.
A diabetic for 18 years, he had been unwell for four days.
“I usually take sweets for my hypoglycaemia but on Sunday, none was available. I remembered I had phone numbers of police personnel and dialled the SHO,” he said.
Keshari later posted a photo of him with the cop on Twitter, narrating how he saved his life.

According to Singh, there are instructions to police to take distress calls of senior citizens very seriously.
“When Keshari called me with his concern, I asked him what would be the best for him. He said rasgulla would be fine. I called a friend who knew a shop where fresh sweets were available. It took me 15 minutes to buy rasgulla and reach his house,” he said.
Lucknow police have helped many others too during the lockdown. Commissioner of police Sujeet Pandey said police were distributing milk, bread, and water among children’s shelter homes and the destitute.
On Sunday, constables Dilip Kumar Patel, Pradeep Gangwar and Avinash Upadhayaya donated blood at Vivekananda Polyclinic for a senior citizen undergoing treatment. As many as 54 other cops have registered for blood donation.
