Maharashtra reported 10 fresh cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of coronavirus patients in the state to 225. Five people had tested positive for novel coronavirus in Mumbai while three cases were reported from Pune. Two in Buldhana were diagnosed with COVID-19 infection.

The death toll from the coronavirus in Maharashtra rose to 11 on Monday with three more people succumbing to infection. Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is one of the worst affected places by the COVID-19 outbreak. Nearly 100 people have so far confirmed positive with coronavirus in Mumbai. COVID-19 has infected as many as 46 people from Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and rural area.

There are 25 coronavirus patients in Sangli, 23 in Thane region, 16 in Nagpur, five in Ahmednagar, four in Yavatmal, three in Buldhana, two each in Satara and Kolhapur, and one each in Aurangabad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Gondia, Jalgaon, and Nashik, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope said. A total of 39 COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered from the disease, Tope added.

With over 200 cases reported on Monday, highest in a single day so far, India's coronavirus count has surged to 1,251. Cases of COVID-19 in the world’s second-most populous country have ticked rapidly higher the past week. "Despite the large population in India, the spread of coronavirus has been limited", said Lav Agrawal, joint secretary, health ministry.

"We took 12 days to go from 100 to 1,000 cases, in developed countries with less population, this has been 3,000, 5,000 or 8,000. This is because of early measures of isolation, lockdown," Agrawal added. The health ministry continues to maintain that there are no instances of community transmission in India.

India is currently under a 21-day nationwide lockdown to prevent the further spread of the COVID-19. Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray appealed to people not to venture out of their homes. "There is enough stock of essential commodities and the essential services will continue to function," Thackeray said earlier.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started GIS mapping of coronavirus affected areas in the city. The maps of the areas where there are higher number of coronavirus cases, will be posted on the civic body's website, BMC commissioner Praveen Pardeshi said in a release.

With the help of the maps, residents in those areas could take precautions, and people visiting those places for any work could easily take preventive measures, Pardeshi said.
