Limpopo has recorded its first Coronavirus (Covid-19) hospital admission case as of this morning (Wednesday).
Departmental spokesperson Neil Shikwambana emphasised that this is a case of a 55-year-old male who recently travelled to Nigeria. He further clarified that the patient was admitted in hospital after presenting with mild to severe symptoms while in isolation at the Modimolle MDR facility which has been designated to isolate all those who tests positive but are a symptomatic for close monitoring by the state.
Shikwambana outlined that the two new cases have been registered in Limpopo as announced by Health Minister Zwelini Mkhize yesterday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 14.
“These are medical doctors who work and share accommodation in Mpumalanga but tested positive in one of our laboratories in Waterberg district. They have since been admitted in our facility for isolation,” Shikwambana explained.
Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba has reportedly called on community members to adhere fully to the rules of the 21 days lockdown: “We are concerned about increased number of cases, which are of people who have traveled from other parts of the country and the world. We call on our people to adhere to the 21-day lockdown period, ” said Ramathuba.
It was learnt that Ramathuba has been in contact with the doctors and the admitted patient to give them moral support and wish them speedy recovery.
Currently, the department is compiling a list of contacts of the two doctors in Limpopo in collaboration with the Mpumalanga Department of Health, Shikwambana stated.
He added that the two cases bring the total number of Covid-19 in Limpopo to 14 with Waterberg having most cases as it is currently at eight, followed by Capricorn with three, Vhembe two and Mopani one.
