MUMBAI: A junior engineer with BMC tested positive foWr coronavirus over the weekend. The 28-year-old who lives in the suburbs and works with the maintenance department in the island city has no travel history.
Civic sources said that the engineer started feeling under the weather last Thursday and so got himself tested at a private hospital.
"After his test result was out, he was moved to Kasturba Hospital," a BMC employee said on the condition of anonymity.
"Also, the civic ward where he works was alerted at once."
This has sparked concern among civic engineers. Assistant municipal commissioner Chakrapani Alle, head of the ward where the engineer is posted, said it is unlikely that he contracted the virus at work. "We have monitored all staff since then but no one else has shown any symptom," Alle reasoned. "The entire ward has been sanitized as a preventive measure.
BJP's Akash Purohit, corporator of the area where the engineer works, said that the engineer had not reported to work for a few days. "It seems unlikely that he infected his colleagues," said Purohit.
