LUCKNOW: The ongoing lockdown due to coronavirus outbreak has not only made humans worry about food but also left lions and leopards at Etawah Lion Safari waiting for food for some time in view of closure of slaughterhouses.
As many as 17 lions and four leopards at the lion safari would have gone without food had the Agra district administration not acted timely. Officials arranged for special permission to ensure meat supply for the felines.
Together, the big cats eat 170kg of buffalo meat everyday which is brought from a slaughter house in Agra.
However, the slaughterhouse was closed due to nationwide lockdown.
Director, Etawah Lion Safari, VK Singh said: “We were alerted well in time by our contractor after which we wrote to Agra district magistrate on March 24.”
Since then, Agra Municipal Corporation has been ensuring continuous supply of meat for lions.
Authorities at Lucknow and Kanpur zoo have also sought special permission from respective district administrations for regular supply of food to animals. Director, Lucknow zoo, RK Singh said the issue has been resolved.
