Social media comes down on those who burst crackers in response to PM's candlelight vigil call
- "It's not a party," "It's not Diwali," netizens vented their ire on social media, as people switched off lights at their homes at 9 pm on Sunday and instead of lighting candles, burst firecrackers in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for a nine-minute candlelight vigil.
- Modi had called for a nine-minute candlelight vigil on Sunday as a means to dispel the darkness spread by the coronavirus pandemic. He had asked people to switch off the lights at their homes and light a candle or a diya at their doorsteps or in their balconies at 9 pm on Sunday.
20,000 worshippers quarantined in Pakistan after major search
- Pakistan has quarantined 20,000 worshippers and is still searching for tens of thousands more who attended an Islamic gathering in Lahore last month despite the worsening coronavirus pandemic, officials said Sunday.
- Authorities said they want to test or quarantine those who congregated at the event held by the Tablighi Jamaat -- an Islamic missionary movement -- between March 10-12 over fears they are now spreading COVID-19 across Pakistan and overseas.
82-yr-old man dies of COVID 19 in Rajasthan; state records fresh 60 cases, number rises to 266
- An 82-year-old coronavirus positive man died at the state-run SMS Hospital here on Sunday even as Rajasthan recorded 60 more COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 266, an official said.
- Out of the 60 new cases reported on Sunday, 39 are from Jaipur alone.
- The deadly virus has so far claimed five lives in the state.
- However, officials maintain that deaths occurred due to co-morbidity -- more than one illness or disease occurring in one person at the same time.
50 people, including doctors, quarantined in Bikaner as woman tests positive after death
- Over 50 people, including doctors and nursing staff of a hospital in Bikaner, have been quarantined after samples taken from a 60-year-old woman, who died on Friday, tested positive for coronavirus, officials said on Sunday.
- The staff at the state-run PBM Hospital had handed over the body of the woman to her family members on Friday afternoon but the results of the test for COVID-19 came at night, they said. By then, the family members had already cremated the body, the officials added.
- An inquiry was ordered after the matter came to light.
- Realising the mistake, a rapid response team was rushed to quarantine the family members, they said.

Ireland's PM returns to medical practice to help in coronavirus crisis
- Ireland's prime minister Leo Varadkar has re-registered as a medical practitioner and will work one shift a week to help out during the coronavirus crisis, his office said on Sunday.
- Varadkar worked as a doctor for seven years before leaving the profession to become a politician and was removed from the medical register in 2013.
- He rejoined the medical register in March, and offered his services to the country's Health Service Executive (HSE) for one session a week in areas that are within his scope of practice, a spokesman for his office said.
Virus-hit US girds for 'Pearl Harbor moment' as death toll spikes
- US governors on Sunday appealed to the White House for a national strategy against the fast-spreading coronavirus, as deaths surged and health authorities warned the coming week could resemble a "Pearl Harbor moment."
- The US death toll was creeping toward the grim milestone of 10,000 as the pandemic's epicenter in New York racked up hundreds of lives lost a day and hospitals girded for an influx of new infected patients.
- Anthony Fauci, the senior American scientist battling the pandemic stateside, warned of a looming "escalation," saying Americans should prepare for "a bad week."
No new COVID-19 case in Bihar in past 24 hours, total count at 32
- No new COVID-19 case was reported on Sunday from anywhere in Bihar, where a total number of 32 people have been afflicted with the dreaded virus, officials said.
- Nearly 2,981 samples have been tested so far, of which 2,945 have come out negative and four have been rejected, while three people have recovered, a bulletin issued by the State Health Society said.

- The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation on Sunday sealed Sundarpada and Jadupur areas in the state capital and declared the localities as "containment zones" after a 70-year-old man, who returned from Australia recently, tested positive for COVID-19 here.
- The man is a resident of Kapila Prasad Housing Board Colony which comes under Sundarpada ward adjacent to Jadupur, Chaudhury said, BMC Commissioner P C Chaudhury said.
Noida: No fresh COVID-19 case, tests see a jump
- No fresh coronavirus positive case was reported on Sunday in Gautam Buddh Nagar, even as the number of COVID-19 tests saw a sharp spike to cross the 1,000-mark, officials said on Sunday.
- Gautam Buddh Nagar adjoining Delhi in western Uttar Pradesh has so far 58 positive cases of COVID-19, the highest for any district in the state, according to official figures.
- "A total 1,020 samples have been sent for COVID-19 test from Gautam Buddh Nagar so far, of which 58 have tested positive, 632 negative and result for 336 was awaited," the Health Department here stated in its daily statement.

- A 60-year-old woman in Punjab's Phagwara committed suicide by consuming celphos, fearing she had contracted the coronavirus disease, police said on Sunday.
- Santosh Kaur, a resident of Khurampur village, committed suicide after she complained of a throat problem.
- She feared that she had contracted the coronavirus disease, her family said.

Telangana: 62 new Coronavirus positive cases reported in Telangana state today with no patients discharged and no deaths today. Total 289 active Coronavirus positive cases being treated at different hospitals across the state.
Haiti reports its first coronavirus death
- Haiti on Sunday reported its first novel coronavirus death, a 55-year-old man who had underlying health conditions.
- The health ministry said the man suffered from diabetes and hypertension.
- He was one of only 21 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus in Haiti, a demographically young country where over half those diagnosed with the disease have been under age 45.
Services exempted by Centre from lockdown allowed to continue in Rajasthan: Govt official
- The Rajasthan government permitted various business sectors to function during the lockdown, including essential goods and services, agriculture, animal husbandry, AYUSH services and transportation, as per clarifications received from the Centre, a senior official said on Sunday.
- Based on the clarification received from the Union Home Ministry, the state government also permitted activities related to hygiene products and all such items that are ordinarily available at grocery or provision stores, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Rajeeva Swarup said here.

AIIMS, Jhajjar to function as dedicated COVID-19 hospital: Harsh Vardhan
- Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday said AIIMS, Jhajjar will function as a dedicated COVID-19 hospital with 300-bed isolation wards, which would ensure a prompt care for the patients in isolation requiring advanced medical support.
- The minister visited the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Haryana's Jhajjar to take stock of its preparedness to combat COVID-19.
- He inspected various facilities in the state-of-the-art building with the isolation facility for COVID-19 patients and visited the Vishram Sadan, the residential quarters for doctors and other health personnel, an official statement said.

- Mahmoud Jibril, who abandoned Muammar Gaddafi to become Libya's rebel prime minister during the 2011 revolution, died on Sunday after contracting the novel coronavirus, an aide and his party said.
- Jibril was interim leader until the country held its first free elections in four decades in 2012, following the toppling of Gaddafi the year before. He died in a private hospital in Cairo where he had been treated since contracting the virus late last month, said the aide, Fawzi Ammar.
Bhopal COVID-19 count rises by 23 in a single day, reaches 40
- The number of COVID-19 patients rose to 40 in Bhopal after 23 people, including 12 members of the Tablighi Jamaat, tested positive for novel coronavirus on Sunday, health officials said.
- Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Sudhir Kumar Deharia said there is no case of community transmission of the virus so far, and the 23 who tested positive on Sunday are either from the health department or are part of the Tablighi Jamaat.
Uber to run cabs for essential services, trials begin in Nashik
- Uber India is piloting a new category to ferry people who come under a government-approved essential travel list during the lockdown period, and the service has already gone live in Nashik, its top executive told ET.
- Uber Essentials, for which approvals are being sought from state governments, will be extended to other cities early this week once approved, said Pradeep Parameswaran, President of Uber India, and South Asia.
Maharashtra: Thane city sees first COVID-19 death
- A 57-year-old man died of COVID-19 in Mumbra township, the first death from the infection in Thane Municipal Corporation limits, civic officials said on Sunday.
- An official release said 13 new cases were detected in Thane district, of which TMC is a part, taking the total to 91.
- Of the 91 cases, 17 are in Thane, 27 in KDMC, NMMC 28, including one death, 13 in Mira-Bhayander, and one each in UMC, Ambernath, and Badlapur, as well as three in Thane rural.

- Swab samples of 25 people from Arunachal Pradesh linked to a religious congregation in Delhi's Nizamuddin have tested negative, health officials said on Sunday.
- Swab samples were taken from 22 people who attended the congregation last month, besides the family members of the state's lone COVID-19 patient. All of the samples tested negative, they said.

Over 70,000 home quarantined in Chhattisgarh
- More than 70,000 people, most of them with a travel history to either foreign countries or other affected states, are kept in home quarantine across Chhattisgarh as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Health officials said on Sunday.
- Of the 70,456 people being home quarantined as on Saturday, 6242 are in Janjgir Champa district, 5987 in Rajnandgaon, 4353 in Bastar, 3827 in Kawardha, 5372 in Balodabazar, 4431 in Bilaspur, 3612 in Bijapur, 4717 in Mungeli, 4986 in Raigarh and 640 in Raipur.

First Covid-19 patient in Dakshina Kannada district recovers
- The first coronavirus patient in Dakshina Kannada district, a 22-year-old youth from Bhatkal, has recovered and will be discharged on Monday.
- The results of his swab samples taken on April 2 and 3 have turned out negative and he has fully recovered, district administration said in a release here.
- No new cases of coronavirus infection were reported from DK and Udupi districts on Sunday.
Ethiopia reports first coronavirus death
- Ethiopia on Sunday announced the first death of a patient suffering from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, as officials ramped up testing to get a clearer picture of the outbreak there.
- "It is my deepest regret to announce the first death of a patient from #COVID19 in Ethiopia," Health Minister Lia Tadesse said on Twitter.
- The victim was a 60-year-old Ethiopian woman who had spent six days in intensive care, a health ministry statement said.

6 Kashmir villages declared 'red zones' after 6 people test positive for coronavirus
- The authorities in Kashmir declared six villages in Bandipora district as 'red zones' on Sunday after six people tested positive for coronavirus in these areas.
- The villages are Konan, Gund Qaiser, Gund-Dachina, Hakbara, Madwan and Pethkote, all in the north Kashmir district, an official spokesperson said.
- "Six more villages were declared red zones and their surrounding villages as buffer zones in the Bandipora district to prevent the spread of coronavirus after six persons from these villages were declared COVID-19 positive in the past two days," he said.

Railways develops low-cost ventilator 'Jeevan', seeks ICMR approval
- The Indian Railways has developed a low-cost ventilator, Jeevan at its Kapurthala Rail Coal Factory that could save thousands of lives at a time the country is grappling with a shortage of the medical equipment in its fight against coronavirus. The prototype is now awaiting ICMR clearance to go into production, the Railways said.
- "It will cost around Rs 10,000 without the compressor. Once we have the ICMR approval, if we have all the materials, we will be able to produce 100 such ventilators a day," Ravinder Gupta, general manager of the RCF and the brain behind Jeevan, told.
Maha: 10 Filipinos, including 3 COVID-19 patients, booked
- Ten Philippines nationals have been booked for residing in Navi Mumbai without informing authorities, police said on Sunday.
- The ten had attended the Tablighi Jamaat event at Nizamuddin in Delhi last month and then come to Navi Mumbai, an official said, and three of them had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Noida: Restrictions under section 144 extended till April 14, police warn violators
- Gautam Buddh Nagar police has extended for another nine days the restrictions imposed in the district under CrPC section 144, in view of the nationwide lockdown which will continue till April 14, officials said on Sunday.
- All gatherings, including political, social and religious, protest rallies and sports events will remain banned across Noida and Greater Noida during the lockdown period, a senior officer said.
- Earlier in the day, the police had said that the restrictions would continue till April 30 but later corrected it to say that the extended duration of CrPC section 144, which bars assembly of four or more people, was only till April 14.
- "The lockdown was called across the country by the central government in view of the coronavirus pandemic till April 14. At the local level, CrPC section 144 was invoked till April 5 but that has now been extended till April 14," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Ashutosh Dwivedi said.

- The United States enters one of the most critical weeks so far in the coronavirus crisis with the death toll exploding in New York, Michigan and Louisiana and some governors calling for a national order to stay at home.
- New York is the hardest-hit state with more than 40% of all U.S. deaths and nearly 115,000 reported cases on Saturday.
- Bodies of victims of COVID-19, the flu-like respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, were stacked in bright orange bags inside a makeshift morgue outside the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, according to photos provided to Reuters.
- U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams warned on Fox News Sunday that hard times were ahead but "there is a light at the end of the tunnel if everyone does their part for the next 30 days."
75 lakh people provided food at special camps set up across country: MHA
- Over 75 lakh needy people, including migrant labourers, have been provided with food at 19,460 special food camps set up across the country in the wake of the lockdown imposed to counter coronavirus pandemic, officials said on Sunday.
- These special food camps are in addition to 27,661 shelters set up for migrant workers and needy people. A total of 12.5 lakh people have been given shelter in these arrangements, they said.
- Soon after the lockdown was imposed across the country, a large number of migrant workers started leaving for their native states on foot in the absence of transport facilities and employment opportunities.
