    • Modi had called for a nine-minute candlelight vigil on Sunday as a means to dispel the darkness spread by the coronavirus pandemic. He had asked people to switch off the lights at their homes and light a candle or a diya at their doorsteps or in their balconies at 9 pm on Sunday.

    • Pakistan has quarantined 20,000 worshippers and is still searching for tens of thousands more who attended an Islamic gathering in Lahore last month despite the worsening coronavirus pandemic, officials said Sunday.
    • Authorities said they want to test or quarantine those who congregated at the event held by the Tablighi Jamaat -- an Islamic missionary movement -- between March 10-12 over fears they are now spreading COVID-19 across Pakistan and overseas.

    82-yr-old man dies of COVID 19 in Rajasthan; state records fresh 60 cases, number rises to 266

    • An 82-year-old coronavirus positive man died at the state-run SMS Hospital here on Sunday even as Rajasthan recorded 60 more COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 266, an official said.
    • Out of the 60 new cases reported on Sunday, 39 are from Jaipur alone.
    • The deadly virus has so far claimed five lives in the state.
    • However, officials maintain that deaths occurred due to co-morbidity -- more than one illness or disease occurring in one person at the same time.

    50 people, including doctors, quarantined in Bikaner as woman tests positive after death

    • Over 50 people, including doctors and nursing staff of a hospital in Bikaner, have been quarantined after samples taken from a 60-year-old woman, who died on Friday, tested positive for coronavirus, officials said on Sunday.
    • The staff at the state-run PBM Hospital had handed over the body of the woman to her family members on Friday afternoon but the results of the test for COVID-19 came at night, they said. By then, the family members had already cremated the body, the officials added.
    • An inquiry was ordered after the matter came to light.
    • Realising the mistake, a rapid response team was rushed to quarantine the family members, they said.

    Ireland's PM returns to medical practice to help in coronavirus crisis

    • Ireland's prime minister Leo Varadkar has re-registered as a medical practitioner and will work one shift a week to help out during the coronavirus crisis, his office said on Sunday.
    • Varadkar worked as a doctor for seven years before leaving the profession to become a politician and was removed from the medical register in 2013.
    • He rejoined the medical register in March, and offered his services to the country's Health Service Executive (HSE) for one session a week in areas that are within his scope of practice, a spokesman for his office said.

    • The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation on Sunday sealed Sundarpada and Jadupur areas in the state capital and declared the localities as "containment zones" after a 70-year-old man, who returned from Australia recently, tested positive for COVID-19 here.
    • The man is a resident of Kapila Prasad Housing Board Colony which comes under Sundarpada ward adjacent to Jadupur, Chaudhury said, BMC Commissioner P C Chaudhury said.

    Noida: No fresh COVID-19 case, tests see a jump

    • No fresh coronavirus positive case was reported on Sunday in Gautam Buddh Nagar, even as the number of COVID-19 tests saw a sharp spike to cross the 1,000-mark, officials said on Sunday.
    • Gautam Buddh Nagar adjoining Delhi in western Uttar Pradesh has so far 58 positive cases of COVID-19, the highest for any district in the state, according to official figures.
    • "A total 1,020 samples have been sent for COVID-19 test from Gautam Buddh Nagar so far, of which 58 have tested positive, 632 negative and result for 336 was awaited," the Health Department here stated in its daily statement.

    • The Rajasthan government permitted various business sectors to function during the lockdown, including essential goods and services, agriculture, animal husbandry, AYUSH services and transportation, as per clarifications received from the Centre, a senior official said on Sunday.

    Libyan revolution premier Jibril dies from coronavirus

    • Mahmoud Jibril, who abandoned Muammar Gaddafi to become Libya's rebel prime minister during the 2011 revolution, died on Sunday after contracting the novel coronavirus, an aide and his party said.
    • Jibril was interim leader until the country held its first free elections in four decades in 2012, following the toppling of Gaddafi the year before. He died in a private hospital in Cairo where he had been treated since contracting the virus late last month, said the aide, Fawzi Ammar.

    Railways develops low-cost ventilator 'Jeevan', seeks ICMR approval

    • The Indian Railways has developed a low-cost ventilator, Jeevan at its Kapurthala Rail Coal Factory that could save thousands of lives at a time the country is grappling with a shortage of the medical equipment in its fight against coronavirus. The prototype is now awaiting ICMR clearance to go into production, the Railways said.
    • "It will cost around Rs 10,000 without the compressor. Once we have the ICMR approval, if we have all the materials, we will be able to produce 100 such ventilators a day," Ravinder Gupta, general manager of the RCF and the brain behind Jeevan, told.

    Noida: Restrictions under section 144 extended till April 14, police warn violators

    • Gautam Buddh Nagar police has extended for another nine days the restrictions imposed in the district under CrPC section 144, in view of the nationwide lockdown which will continue till April 14, officials said on Sunday.
    • All gatherings, including political, social and religious, protest rallies and sports events will remain banned across Noida and Greater Noida during the lockdown period, a senior officer said.
    • Earlier in the day, the police had said that the restrictions would continue till April 30 but later corrected it to say that the extended duration of CrPC section 144, which bars assembly of four or more people, was only till April 14.
    • "The lockdown was called across the country by the central government in view of the coronavirus pandemic till April 14. At the local level, CrPC section 144 was invoked till April 5 but that has now been extended till April 14," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Ashutosh Dwivedi said.

    • Over 75 lakh needy people, including migrant labourers, have been provided with food at 19,460 special food camps set up across the country in the wake of the lockdown imposed to counter coronavirus pandemic, officials said on Sunday.
    • These special food camps are in addition to 27,661 shelters set up for migrant workers and needy people. A total of 12.5 lakh people have been given shelter in these arrangements, they said.
    • Soon after the lockdown was imposed across the country, a large number of migrant workers started leaving for their native states on foot in the absence of transport facilities and employment opportunities.
