Covid-19: Man Who Harassed Doctor Arrested In Gujarat After Video Goes Viral

Amid Covid-19 in India and other parts of the world, the doctors and Health workers are being subjected to harassment and discrimination.

In a similar incident a woman psychiatrist, who worked with New Civil Hospital in Surat,  was subjected to harassment and humiliation by her neighbor.

Fortunately, the accused- a couple, who harassed the psychiatrist, has now been arrested after the video of the incident went viral.

According to a report in Times of India, the couple criticised the woman doctor and did not allow her to go to NCH from her apartment in Adajan.

The accused have been identified as Chetan Mehta and his wife Bhavna. The arrest came after Dr Sanjibani Panigarhi submitted a complaint to police.

The doctor in her complaint stated,

“The accused  Chetan forced me inside my house and when I tried to record his misbehaviour through my mobile phone, he tried to snatch it. He also threatened me with serious consequences and told me to vacate the flat.”

“On April 4, when I came back from my duty, Chetan questioned me whether I contracted Covid-19 and why I am continuing to go to hospital. Then again on April 5, when I went out of my flat with my pet dog, he stood before me. Chetan screamed that my pet has tried to attack him,” the doctor added.

Panigarhi lives in a rented flat with her husband and 3-year-old son.

Warning from housing society residents

The doctor alleged that on March 23, some residents of the housing society warned her not to go out. They also threatened her that she would be forced to vacate the rented flat.

After the incident, the doctor tweeted to the Prime Minister Office (PMO) and sought help from her local BJP MLA.

With the intervention of police and local MLA, the society residents stopped harassing the woman. However, the couple did not relent and continued to misbehave with the doctor.

“We have arrested the couple to set an example. The accused have been booked under Section 151 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
