Coronavirus: More than 1,000 new Florida cases; 10 in Volusia, 1 in Flagler

The Florida Department of Health reported 1,118 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, including 10 in Volusia County and one in Flagler County.

This brings the total number to 14,747. Of the state’s cases, 14,304 are residents and 443 are non-residents.

FDOH also reported 42 new deaths in Florida, bringing the total to 296.

Across the state, 1,893 people have been hospitalized with coronavirus, according to the FDOH.

As of 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, 43% of the 60,163 hospital beds across the state are empty, according to data by the Agency for Healthcare Administration. In addition, nearly 37% of the 6,036 ICU beds statewide are empty.

In Volusia County, 792 of the 1,513 hospital beds are available and 92 of the 230 ICU beds are available, according to AHCA data.

At AdventHealth Palm Coast, Flagler County’s only hospital, 41 of the 112 hospital beds and eight of the 18 ICU beds are available, according to AHCA’s data.

Volusia County has 10 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 163 cases, according to the FDOH. Of the 10 new cases, seven are men and three are woman and they are between the ages of 26-65. It’s unknown how seven of them contracted the virus, two got it from another positive coronavirus case and one has a recent history of travel to New York.

On Monday, state officials announced the third COVID-19 death in Volusia — a 78-year-old woman with no recent travel history and no known contact with someone who had tested positive for the virus.

On Saturday, Volusia’s second death was reported — a 78-year-old woman who had traveled to Ecuador and had contact with a known coronavirus case.

Volusia’s first coronavirus death was a 65-year-old man with no recent travel history and no known contact with someone who had tested positive for the virus, officials said.

Also Saturday, Stetson University confirmed that a second student tested positive for COVID-19. That student was living alone in an on-campus apartment until March 26, the school announced. A student and faculty member who had limited contact with the virus-positive student are showing no symptoms, and Stetson officials contacted all students living on that floor of the apartment building.

Flagler County has one new coronavirus case, a 76-year-old man who has a recent history of travel to New York, brings the total to 35.

Flagler County has reported one death so far: 72-year-old Dorothy Strickland who passed away last week. According to the FDOH, she contracted the virus from someone who had tested positive.

On Tuesday night, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood provided a list of cities with confirmed cases: Deltona, 30; Daytona Beach, 29; Ormond Beach, 26; Port Orange, 20; DeLand, 18; DeBary, 16; Orange City, seven; New Smyrna Beach, five; Lake Helen, two; Edgewater, two; and Ponce Inlet, one. Three were listed as no city specified. Four were non-residents.

In addition to the positive cases, Chitwood also listed the number of locations per city being monitored for possible coronavirus infections as of Tuesday night: Deltona, 44; Daytona Beach, 27; DeLand, 21; Port Orange, 21; Ormond Beach, 22; Debary, 15; Orange City, 12; Edgewater, four; New Smyrna Beach, four; South Daytona, three; Osteen two; DeLeon Springs, two; Holly Hill, one; and Lake Helen, one.

Florida has tested a total of 139,669 people as of Tuesday evening.
