Manchester United had an issue at full-back for a long time after the departures of club greats Patrice Evra and Gary Neville.

Brazilian twins Rafael and Fabio da Silva did a job for a time, but Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young were converted wingers and little more than stop-gaps, until recent signings made them surplus to requirements.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has a healthy array of options in the full back slots after the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka last summer and the emergence of Brandon Williams. But how do the current crop rank from best to worst?

Below, MEN Sport ranks United's current first team options in the full back positions...

5. Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Fosu-Mensah is United's forgotten man, having not played a single first team game all season - which has largely been spent recovering from an ACL injury suffered while on loan at Fulham a year ago.

His contract is due to expire in the summer, though there is the option of an extra year if United deem the Dutchman a useful enough asset to back up their defence. He can play across the back four or in midfield and is still only 22, having been highly rated by Louis van Gaal.

Fosu-Mensah is down this pecking order as it stands, but clearly has potential.

4. Diogo Dalot

Dalot has slipped a little on this list since an exciting spell in the United team under Solskjaer last season. He will forever be remembered by United fans for winning that famous penalty against PSG from which Marcus Rashford scored and was impressive at times towards the end of last term.

And though he's still only 21 and his absences this season have largely been injury related - plus the fact he is extremely versatile - Dalot could be reaching a crossroads in his career. He has Wan-Bissaka ahead of him in his favoured position and has a huge task to win a regular spot in the side.

3. Brandon Williams

At the start of the campaign, Williams would have been way down this list, probably not even on it considering he was an Under-23s player who didn't even travel on United's pre-season tour.

But he's capitalised on the opportunities handed to him by Solskjaer, initially coming into the team when Luke Shaw and Ashley Young were unavailable for a Europa League tie. At just 19 and able to play on the right or further up the pitch as a wing-back, Williams has the world at his feet.

For the immediate term, he must continue to push Shaw for the regular left-back slot. There's no doubt he will only improve.

2. Luke Shaw

It has sometimes felt like Shaw has been fighting a battle at United. He's often struggled for fitness and when he's played, some United fans remain unconvinced about his abilities.

Yet the former Southampton prodigy is now 24 and before this recent football shutdown was enjoying arguably his best spell of form for the club. He's shown himself willing and able to play in a back three and looks to be more defensively disciplined than ever before.

Shaw is a solid left-back and can still get better now he's fully established at Old Trafford.

1. Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Wan-Bissaka has changed the entire outlook at United's defence with his brand of committed and solid full back play.

He's already looking like a bargain at £45million from Crystal Palace and his performances since the summer mean he'll definitely be among the contenders for United's player of the season prize, whatever happens with the remainder of the campaign.

At just 22, it's frightening to think how good Wan-Bissaka can become. There's no doubt United have a gem in the right-back.
