    Telangana govt bans spitting in public places

    • Spitting in public places and institutions has been banned in Telangana in the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic with the state government saying such acts poses a serious threat of leading to the spread of infections.
    • "In the interest of public health and safety, the spitting of paan/any chewable tobacco or non-tobacco product, sputum etc, in public places & institutions is hereby BANNED with immediate effect," a notification said.

    Delhi Police head constable tests positive for COVID-19

    • A 44-year-old Delhi Police head constable tested positive for coronavirus in Rohini area on Wednesday, officials said.
    • According to police, they received information around 3.40 pm that one head constable in Rohini's Sector-16 has tested positive for COVID-19.
    • He was posted in the Foreign Regional Registration Office at the Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 3. His test was conducted on Saturday at Baba Sahib Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital and reports came on Wednesday, a senior police officer said.

    • Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev on Wednesday ordered the deployment ACP-rank officers at all quarantine centres in the national capital for their strict monitoring.
    • According to an order, Dev said the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)-rank officers will be deployed (preferably at night) in a shift to maintain law and order and to ensure that COVID-19 affected people remain inside the centres.

    Guj: 31 private hospitals to be used for COVID-19 treatment

    • The Gujarat government said on Wednesday that 31 private hospitals across the state would be put to use as 'designated' COVID-19 hospitals for coronavirus patients.
    • Already, dedicated COVID-19 hospitals with combined capacity of 2,200 beds are operational in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat.
    • The 31 new designated hospitals will add 4,064 beds, said an official release.

    Finland discovers masks bought from China not hospital-safe

    • Two million protective masks purchased by Finland from China have turned out to be unsuitable for use in hospitals, the Finnish government admitted on Wednesday.
    • On Tuesday Finland's Health minister Aino-Kaisa Pekonen had tweeted a picture of the first shipment of two million surgical masks and 230,000 respirator masks being unloaded at Helsinki airport on a Finnair flight from Guangzhou in China, saying they would be "checked and tested" before use.

    • The AIIMS administration has rejected the proposal by its Resident Doctors' Association to make donations to the PM-CARES fund voluntary or opt-in, saying there is no mechanism in place for an opt-in donation in the institute.
    • In response to the RDA's demand, the administration on Wednesday said there is no mechanism currently for an opt-in donation and all such voluntary donations are to be made directly to the charity of choice.

    • HDFC Bank on Wednesday deployed Mobile ATMs to assist customers during the lockdown and eliminate the need to move out of their locality to withdraw cash.

    • Germany and France, the EU's two largest economies, are bracing for a painful recession as the coronavirus pandemic slashes output to the lowest levels in decades, forecasts said Wednesday.
    • Gross domestic product in export powerhouse Germany is expected to shrink by nearly 10 percent in the second quarter as shutdowns aimed at slowing the outbreak paralyse the global economy, the country's leading research institutes said in a report.

    UK man jailed for stealing hospital face masks

    • A man who stole three face masks from a London hospital during the coronavirus crisis has been jailed for three months.
    • Lerun Hussain, 34, pleaded guilty to the theft at a London magistrates' court on Tuesday after the theft from King's College Hospital late on Sunday.
    • Hussain, from south London, was arrested on suspicion of theft and also detained for being in breach of a court order.

    Cyber agency asks parents to monitor child's Internet activity amid spurt during lockdown

    • With school-going children increasingly using the internet for studies during lockdown imposed to control the spread of coronavirus, the national cyber security agency on Wednesday asked parents to monitor their online activity and guard against cyber bullying and inappropriate content streaming.
    • "The Internet is a good resource for kids to prepare school reports, communicate with teachers and other kids and play interactive games. But online access also comes with risks like inappropriate content, cyber bullying and online predators," the CERT-In said in an advisory.
