To help stop the spread of COVID-19, The Florida Department of Health in Broward County reminds everyone to practice social distancing, wash your hands often with soap and water and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
Coming up in the newscast, Miami-Dade county prints thousands of unemployment applications, a second COVID-19 test site opens in Palm Beach County and Miami’s Best of the Best concert cancelled.
Now for the news in the detail
While Florida’s unemployment website and call center continue to struggle due to the overwhelming number of applicants, Miami-Dade has begun printing thousands of physical applications and using about half of the county’s libraries as distribution and delivery centers. Starting Wednesday, people who don’t have access to computers can go to one of 26 libraries in the county to fill out their unemployment claim and return it to that same location. In the meantime, a second COVID-19 drive-thru test site has been opened in Palm Beach County. The site, located at the South County Civic Center in Delray Beach, was open on April 6. The site will not accept any random residents, and thus all persons are required to schedule an appointment before showing up. Appointments can be made by calling 561-804-0250. The first testing site, located at the FITTEAM Ballpark is still accepting appointments for testing.
In Caribbean News, a team of engineers and doctors have begun making face shields and a ventilator to assist the local health ministry in their shortage of medical equipment. Since beginning two weeks ago, over 5000 face shields have been made. The ventilator, which was made with wood and old ventilator parts is up-and-running and in the process of being approved by the ministry of health. The local innovators have been lauded by Prime Minister Andrew Holness for their effort to assist healthcare professionals in the fight against COVID-19.
In the meantime, Organizers of Miami’s annual ‘Best of the Best’ concert say that the all-female lineup that was planned for this year’s event will be maintained for the 2021 edition. The concert was set for May 24 but was cancelled as COVID-19 spreads across Miami and the wider South Florida region. Leading the lineup for next year’s event is Grammy-award winning reggae artist Koffee, dancehall sensation Spice, Soca queen Allison Hinds, and many others.
