Jimmy Kimmel is the new Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host

The ABC late-night host was a natural fit for the series' return. Earlier in his career he was the comedic foil and co-host on "Win Ben Stein's Money." Kimmel will try to fill the big prime-time shoes of the iconic original host, Regis Philbin. When the program was in syndication, Meredith Vieira, Terry Crews, Cedric the Entertainer and Chris Harrison ("The Bachelor") all took turns in the question-asking chair.

The premiere episode features "Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet, on the heels of that show's series finale. "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Will Forte will be the other funny man playing for charity. Stonestreet will be playing for Building Hope For Autism while Forte will try to earn money for The Pangaea Network.

Among the celebrities set to compete in future episodes: Jane Fonda, Anderson Cooper, Dr. Phil McGraw, Anthony Anderson and Nikki Glaser.

What is the format for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

The game features 14 multiple-choice general-knowledge questions of increasing difficulty. The dollar values range from $500 to $1 million, with at least $5,000 secure after players answer five consecutive questions and no less than $50,000 for answering 10 consecutive questions. There will be still the standard lifelines to ask for outside help, as well as the 50/50, which eliminates two of the wrong answers.

Can you play Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for real money?

Download "Millionaire Live," the accompanying app from Sony Television Games, on either your ioS or Android device. At 11:05 p.m. ET Wednesdays, a few minutes after the conclusion of the ABC episode, the same money the celebrities earn that night will be available to win.

Kay Adams, co-host of NFL Network's "Good Morning Football," will host the events through the app. Users playing for their portion of the prize will have access to the lifelines of 50/50, Go With the Audience and Double Dip, which allows players a second chance at answering a question correctly.
