The Utah Film Center is taking its children’s film festival online. Tumbleweeds on Demand — at TumbleweedsFilmFestival.org — features family and children’s films from around the world.
Movies are $6.99 each for three-day rentals. They’re drawn from past Tumbleweeds Film Festivals or are “in the spirit of the programming offered at the annual event,” according to the UFC.
This year, the festival expanded from one weekend to two in March — but the second weekend had to be canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“As our world continues to adapt to physical distancing and families are staying home, we prioritized finding a way for our young cinema lovers to be able to watch Tumbleweeds films,” said Utah Film Center executive director Patrick Hubley. “Though it is a sad and challenging time, we’re excited to launch this platform.”
The first five films on the streaming site are:
• “The Detectives” (“Detektiverne”), a Danish film (with English subtitles) about a 13-year-old girl who’s a detective.
• “Dragon Girls” (“Drachenmädchen”) a German-Chinese film (in Mandarin with English subtitles) about three girls training to be kung fu fighters.
• “Pim & Pom: The Big Adventure,” an animated Dutch film (in English) about two feline friends trying to find their way home.
• “Romy’s Salon” (“Kapsalon Romy”), a Dutch-German film (in Dutch, Danish and German with English subtitles) about a girl who makes surprising discoveries about her grandmother.
• “Supa Modo,” a Kenyan/German film (in Swahili with English subtitles) about a young girl with a terminal illness who dreams of being a superhero.
Those five films will be available to rent until May 7, and new films will be added regularly.
