    West Bengal state secretariat to be closed for 2 days for sanitisation

    Starting Sunday, the West Bengal government will conduct a two-day disinfection drive at the multi-storied state secretariat building 'Nabanna' to contain the spread of coronavirus, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday. "From tomorrow, Nabanna will be closed for two days. We will sanitise the entire building. Officials, workers and police officers come here regularly. We are also requesting the press to skip coming here for the next two days since their room (the press corner) needed to be sanitised too," Banerjee said at the state secretariat.

    Centre should come up with 'Food for Work' scheme for poor: Rajasthan CM urges PM

    Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the Centre should come up with a 'Food for Work' scheme as a social safety net for the poor in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown. While participating in the video conference of chief ministers of various states with the Prime Minister, Gehlot said that the decision on the extension of the lockdown should be taken after taking all the states into confidence.The CM pointed out that the ongoing lockdown poses a threat to the livelihood of the ragpickers, hawkers/rickshaw pullers, nomads and other helpless people. In such a situation, the Centre should consider revamping a scheme on the lines of 'Food for Work'. Food grains are available in bulk with the central government for the operation of such a scheme, he said in a statement.

    Italy tops 19,000 coronavirus deaths

    Italy has topped 19,000 deaths and 150,000 cases of the coronavirus. The toll further surged on Saturday, even as the country continued to see a slight decrease in numbers of people hospitalized and in intensive care. Deaths rose by 3.2 per cent, or 619, to 19,468, while the number of people who tested positive for the virus reached 152,271, an increase of 4,694, or 3.1 per cent.Officials have been warning Italians not to keep their guard down even if the number of new cases and deaths is narrowing, especially on the Easter holiday weekend when many are tempted to go to the countryside or seashore.

    Kerala supports extension of lockdown with relaxations at non-hotspots

    Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan told the media that at PM Narendra Modi's meeting today the state suggested the following:

    • Extension of lockdown till April 30 with relaxations at non-hotspots as per local requirement.
    • Do not open up the transport sector as this would accelerate the rate of infection and increase risk of a community spread.
    • Special non-stop trains for those among the 3.85 lakh migrant workers in the states who urgently want to go home. They could be given financial assistance for the next three months through Direct Benefit Transfer mechanism.
    • Special flights to bring back people who went aboard on short-term and visiting visas and are now stuck overseas.

    Noida: No fresh COVID-19 case, 5.62 lakh people screened

    No fresh case of coronavirus infection was reported in Noida and Greater Noida on Saturday, keeping the tally at 64, even as 5.62 lakh people have been screened for COVID-19 so far in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, officials said. Adjoining Delhi, Gautam Buddh Nagar in western Uttar Pradesh is among the 15 districts of the state where hotspots (areas that have recorded multiple COVID-19 cases) have been completely sealed.

    200 cases registered, over 3,500 detained for defying lockdown norms in Delhi

    Police registered 200 cases and detained 3,515 people in Delhi on Saturday for violating government orders during the coronavirus lockdown, officials said. According to the data shared by the police, the cases were registered till 5 pm under IPC section 188 (for disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant). A total of 3,515 people have been detained under section 65 (persons bound to comply with reasonable directions of police officers) and 400 vehicles impounded under section 66 of the Delhi Police Act, they stated.The police also registered 100 cases against people for stepping outside their residence without wearing masks.

    Special trains for transporting perishable food items

    The government on Saturday said that Indian Railways is running special trains to transport perishable food items and seeds across the country for ensuring availability of these products during the lockdown. "Indian Railways has identified 67 routes (134 trains) for Parcel Special Trains since the start of the lockdown for perishable commodities including fruits, vegetables, milk and dairy products and seeds for agriculture purpose," the agriculture ministry said in a statement.Till now, 62 routes have been notified and 171 time-tabled trains are being run on these routes. The special trains have been planned to connect all the major cities of the country.

    Uttarakhand govt seeks extension of lockdown

    Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Saturday sought extension of the lockdown in Uttarakhand till April 30 and suggested a partial lifting of restrictions on public movement in districts that have not reported any cases of COVID-19. The state government has also submitted a detailed lockdown exit policy to the Centre, official sources said.

    Hundreds of health workers in Australia to undertake vaccine trial

    Hundreds of health workers in the state of South Australia will undergo a clinical trial to test whether an established tuberculosis vaccine can be used to reduce the severity of the novel coronavirus symptoms by providing a boost to the immune system. According to the ABC science news, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) has been researching the effects of the vaccine known as the Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine (BCG), for some time. Almost 250 health workers will be given the vaccine and 250 others will be given a placebo.
