MLC KT Srikantegowda and his son raised objection to setting up of a Covid-19 testing centre near his house
MANDYA: A JD(S) legislator opposed the setting up of a Covid-19 testing centre near his residence, saying it posed an infection risk, and manhandled some journalists who had turned up to give samples. MLC KT Srikantegowda, his son and three aides have been booked under IPC sections and under the Disaster Management Act.
Following an advisory from the government, district health officers set up a testing centre at Dr Ambedkar Bhavan in Subhash Nagar on Saturday morning to collect throat swab samples.
While testing was under way, the MLC, along with his son Krishikgowda and his supporters, barged into the building and demanded the t centre be shut down.
A livid Srikantegowda pulled up Mandya DC Venkatesh, SP Parashuram and other officers, saying the testing centre near his house posed an infection risk to the neighbourhood. He threatened to hold the authorities responsible “if there is a virus outbreak” in the locality.
Though officials tried to explain, the MLC and his son refused to relent and got into a scuffle with journalists and manhandled them. Police detained the duo on the spot.
Mandya West police filed an FIR against the MLC, his son and others. They have been booked under IPC sections for unlawful assembly, breach of peace, wrongful restraint and for committing an act likely to spread an infectious disease.
The Mandya SP said action would be initiated under provisions of Disaster Management Act 2005 as well.
