LUCKNOW: When 35-year-old Insaaf Ali, a labourer in Mumbai's Vasai, began his journey back home in Shravasti 15 days ago — like many others struggling to find food, source of income and shelter — little did he know that it would be his last one.
Ali covered a distance of about 1,400 km walking and when he reached his village on Monday, he was taken to a quarantine centre in Matkhanwa under Malhipur police station of the district.
He died there after five hours.
Walking man died of dehydration and exhaustion
He died a few hours later, reportedly of dehydration and exhaustion.
Superintendent of police, Shravasti, Anoop Kumar Singh said that Ali reached Matkhanwa around 7 am and was quarantined after basic tests at a local school.
“He was also served a proper breakfast after which he took rest. But, after five hours, he began complaining of pain in upper part of the stomach and also vomited thrice,” said Singh. Before the doctors were informed Ali collapsed.
Chief Medical Officer AP Bhargav, told TOI that around 11.30 am they were informed by the police that Ali has died at a quarantine center. “We have taken the samples and sent them to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in Lucknow for conducting test of covid-19 virus,” said Bhargav.

"Only after the report comes out then we will conduct a post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of Ali’s death," said Bhargav, adding " However, during preliminary checkup done by a team of doctors no signs or symptoms of coronavirus were traced."
The pradhan of Matkhanwa village, Agyaram, however, said that Ali had reached Shravasti on April 24 and stayed at his in-laws’ place 10 km away. “On Monday, when his condition started deteriorated he set out for his house in Matkhanwa village and was quarantined at a government school. Later, he died complaining of stomach pain and vomiting,” he told TOI.
Ali is survived by his wife Salma Begum and their 6-year-old son.
